Your anti-Asian machinery rhetoric is premature. The season is still quite young.

Second 4cammers statement. REALLY hard to support a bike when the rider is a tool.

i'm a Mat fan. he says what he means and means what he says. no hidden agenda, no 2-face behavior. straight answers to straight questions the 2 times i managed to speak with him and a smile to boot.

jaimec sez: "unfortunately. Mat's in it for the money these days."

It is his J-O-B! I guess that you go to work and labor all day for nothing, right? Plus his job is a lot more dangerous than yours, and I don't even know what you do...it doesn't matter. PLUS, he is a lot better at his job than you are, and I don't even know what you do...it doesn't matter.

The man is a proven champion and could have gone for bigger bucks in WSB (or MotoGP?), but chose to live in the USA with his family. That contradicts the picture that you paint of Matt.

No, all indications are he'd make a LOT more money staying here in AMA Superbike. And his family is in AUSTRALIA, not the United States.

Remember, the big sticking point for Ben Spies was finding a team in either MotoGP or WSBK that would be willing to MATCH his AMA salary. I don't know the specifics, but I suspect he isn't making quite as much "base" salary in WSBK as he was in AMA (though his bonuses and sponsorship dollars may be more).

Now that Ben is doing so well, I'm sure the other WSBK teams would be interested in luring Mat across the pond too. The sticking points for him would be his salary demands AND his age.

Does he? I'm pretty sure I'd read an interview at the end of last year where he said he was looking forward to going back home to Australia. He has a business back there (Mat Mladin Imports) in the off-season: http://www.mladinimports.com/index.htm

I believe the gentleman in question maintains multiple homes.

And travels during the off season to the more 'Southerly' of the two. However during working months, lives in NV.

I don't know the status of his family, however they are often seen at races on the Western side of the nation.. so that may be an indicator they too travel between the two homes.

Would make sense. He makes enough to have more than one residence. Otherwise, the commute would be a BITCH!

Jaime, its is the bike. look at Haga is whipping Spies ass big time. Too bad Spies did not go with the superior bike (Ducati)
I said it from the begginig of the season.
Stoner will win GP. Japp technology is good for my lawnmower that is about it.

Hasn't Spies been on Pole all races this season? That's pretty good for lawnmower technology. He has had a couple of unfortunate crashes but that Yamaha seems to have no problem running with the Duc when he stays on two wheels. Spies is new to the tracks and still does a great job.

And Stoners almighty Ducati lost to a Yamaha last season and right now he is behind the same Yamaha in the standings.

It must be tough for you everytime Spies or Rossi win a race...

Is there a source that says Matt's family is in Australia? I doubt that seriously, especially since they are seen at races routinely. I saw them at Barbers too.

Is there a source that says AMA pays more to its top riders than WSB? Does that make a lick of sense?

Matt is a private pilot and owns/flies his own plane to many meets, if not all of them. That cuts down on the commute for sure.

The point being that Matt is a very private, complex person who is driven by a lot more things than just money...which seemed to be the gist of several posts. He has plenty of money, so why would one think that his greed is overpowering his every decision?

The fact is that nobody other than his family and a few close friends really knows what motivates this man...the rest is just gossip, or at best, speculation.

A poll a few years back on the richest Australian sportsmen said Mat Mladin's income was over 7 million dollars a year ,and besides Valentino Rossi no other pro Motorcycle roadracer is known to make that much money .

And there are enough stories flying around the internet that show a completely DIFFERENT side of the man, too. Don't just go by ONE side of the story.

Piss on the fans. True hero.

You really do NOT know what was going on there, do you? So you just make your own assumptions based on your preconceived biases. That doesn't take much thought...jump to conclusions, it doesn't matter who you hurt in the process.

Walt,

Thanks for the pointer to Mat's blog. Very informative and interesting look into how his mind works.

Mat may NOT be as warm and cuddly as Nicky Hayden... but he isn't the heartless villain so many are willing to believe he is either.

Yeah, pretty cutting remarks by Mladin. Guess it's easy to make those type of comments being a "big fish in a small pond". Wonder how different his career would have been if he would have stepped up to a world stage like WSB or MotoGP?

He would have been poorer with less to fall back on when the racing was done. Remember follow the money. And does anyone ever consider maybe he likes living in America and doesn't want to live in Europe.

I just read the Ben Spies success in WSBK has a LOT of people now considering Mladin (a man who has beaten Spies more often than Spies has beaten him on a race-by-race basis), but his age is a definite factor here. How many years would he have left? And the money is a BIG factor. Mat doesn't NEED bragging rights, he just likes collecting his paycheck and living comfortably and I see nothing wrong with that.

I think Spies success in WSBK shows just how strong a competitor Mladin is. It's just at WSBK, there are a LOT more competitors closer to Spies and Mladin's talent than there were in AMA Superbike, so Ben has to dig deeper to win. Hopefully he'll continue to do so, and cut down on the number of times he crashes out of the race (something he almost NEVER did here in the States).

As for Mladin's comments on Rossi... GET REAL! You don't become the number one racer in the world by being a "Nice Guy." He may be more of a sportsman than Mat, and better at playing the game, but make no mistake: He's in the game to WIN, and if you're in the way LOOK OUT. Just ask Sete Gibernau or Max Biaggi.

Rossi is the peoples' champ, adored be millions. That takes being dominant on the track but keeping it real with the fans. Mladin has the dominance part down, but he fails dismally with the fans.

I agree with the underlying competitiveness of Rossi, who wouldn't. No one would be successful at that level without it.
