Buells are still in FX, I'll explain the situation later.

Basically here's the story as I heard it:

There's the AMA PRO racing board of directors, that makes the rules, and the AMA advisory board, made up of AMA riders, crew chiefs and mechanics. A jury of your peers, in a sense.

Well the advisory board is the one that voted, unanimously, twice, to not allow unrestricted air cooled twins into the new FX class after the Pro Racing board revised the rules on August 18th. So it was the current AMA riders, crew chiefs and mechanics that voted that way.

Mike heard about this during the AMA races at VIR, and fired off the letter that appeared in Cycle News to respond to the issues raised by the board.

Here's the twist: As the name implies, the advisory board is not binding, so unless the PRO RACING Board of directors changes their mind, air cooled bikes are still in Formula Extreme next year.

So if you want to help reinforce the AMA pro racing board's ruling letting air cooled bikes into FX, I would send them a polite email expressing your wishes.

You can find them at: http://www.amaproracing.com/proemail.asp

I did just that, and got a real response here's the e-mail

Sent: Monday, September 08, 2003 8:05 AM
To: AMA Pro Information
Subject: Formula Extreme

I've heard alot of debate on Buells in the AMA and just wanted to remind
you this is the American Motorcycle Association. Buell may not produce
an inline 4 , but I believe there needs to be a place that they can be
run compettitively. Formula Extreme seems to fit the bill. Eric Buell
has done more for roadracing in the US than most realize and there are
tons of Sunday Harley riders that need a destination. It would be nice
to see them in the grandstands, but they'll need to have an association
with their brand to build an intrest. I'm not suggesting a giveaway
Buell class, perhaps horsepower limits would keep things more equal and
understandable for spectators. Thank you, Doug Burton, dougb123@att.net

The response,

Doug,
Formula Xtreme is exactly where the Buells are for 2004 (see 2004 road
racing rule changes on amaproracing.com). Where are you seeing info that
says differently?

Thanks,
Merrill Vanderslice

It would appear to me, they are in.

And they are asking where you hear different... did you point them to RRWorlds article? It seems they are getting inundated with angry Buellers and don't know why.

Cool. I think a translation is deserved...

AMA advisory board = Japanese Factory Interests

Kudos to AMAPR for standing up to them! Bravo.

Rod Serling is narrating in the background. This looks like Badweb, but it really isn't. I know, because I just read a post where Blake posted, "Kudos to AMAPR for standing up to them! Bravo." The only thing that could get stranger is having Dyna start singing the praises of Dealerships and their Service Departments.

Ducati Austin representatives voted against it too.

Guess they are backing their Ducati racing instead of Buell.

They dont even have a Buell team that I'm aware of or am I wrong?

I still think they are stupid for having dumped Picotte.

Which is part of the reason Mike Ciccoto was so mad and sent that letter to Cycle News.

But they are in, so don't worry and get ready for the 2004 AMA season, which will probably be the best one in a long while with more Factory teams and competitive privateer teams.

The only gripe I have now is with the Nascar/Speed channel, as I haven't seen any Formula Extreme coverage since the revamped Two Wheel Tuesdays began.

Austin Buell DOES NOT have a Buell race team nor do they have any itenntion of starting one. Dumping Gobert was not about his ability but about his attitude. From what I have been told by a Austin Duc "insider" he had a bad habit of qutiing if he wasn't in the top 5 always claiming the bike wasn't running well. Of course the mecahnics couldn't find anything wrong with the bike.

AMA advisory board = Japanese Factory Interests

I stand by that statement. The Japanese interests far and away dominate the advisory board.

Sorry JQ, I guess you misinterpreted my post. Seemed pretty clear to me.

This is a waste of time, but I'll try it one more time:

A. The advisory board vote was unanimous.

B. Ducati Austin team members are in the advisory board.

A + B = Ducati Austin voted against the proposal too. Does this mean that Ducati Austin seeks to please the Japanese? Of course not.

AMA advisory board = Factory Interests would be more accurate.

If Buell and/or MotoGuzzi race in the AMA next year, they might become part of the Advisory board too. If they vote unanimously about something next year, will it mean that they seek to please the Japanese Factory interests?

Of course not, but your japanophobia is hard to control, ain't it?

The VAST majority of members of the AMAPR advisory board represent Japanese interests. That is a simple fact. Therefore the truth and logic of my statement stands irrefutably.

I'm sorry that you mistake my utter contempt for corruption and lies as some type of ethnic phobia. It is entirely unrelated.

I have no idea why Ducati Austin voted to ban Buells and two strokes from FX. Maybe they, like the Japanese, don't want the added competition. It makes no difference to the fact that the vast majority of advisory board members represent Japanese interests. The majority rules. That fact is irrefutable. It is pretty damn simple logic. Surely you can recognize it... It doesn't matter how anyone else on the advisory board votes; the Japanese interests on the currently configured advisory board will always set the agenda and get their way. Who do you think dreamed up the recommendation to ban Buell from FX in the first place? DUH!

Now, did the advisory board go one by one through each new AMA Racing Board proposal for a vote, or did Mr. Broadhead (an odd Japanese name, btw) bring the issue up when it looked like it would not be discussed in front of the Advisory Board?

Either way, Ducati Austin voted against it too, which invalidates Blake's equation and premise.

Sure there are more Japanese manufacturers than any others, that's plainly evident.

However, that does not mean that they vote the same all the time. I'm sure Kawasaki didn't like racing their 750-800cc Superbike with the same minimum weight as the 1000's this year.

But Buells are be in FX anyway, so it's a moot point.

moot adj. debatable; undecided n. Law discussion of a hypothetical case as an academic (in this case idiotic) exercise. adj. arguable, undetermined, controversial, doubtful, disputable, open to debate, at issue, indefinite.

While I doubt that he intended to, JQ picked the perfect word to describe this thread.

Buells hold, like no other newcomer to date, the capacity to utterly embarrass some folks who have fortunes and ego heavily invested.

I'm betting, with the aid of time, that Buell perseveres. Ultimately, cries for justice and equity will overcome. In the interim, the actions of some folks are serving only to cement the absurdity of their ill-conceived actions.

Just an opinion...

There is alot of room for Buell to take advantage of rules that allow 1348cc twins, two valve air cooled push rod or otherwise. There is technology available whereby the huge displacement advantage could be translated into a corresponding hp advantage. When this happens, there will be a corresponding cry of favoritism towards the brand.

When Buell gets the XB to rev to 9000 rpm, the cry will come.

Who will drive the bike next year? Will there be one rider or two? I'm looking forward to a "real" factory effort.

JQ,

I don't believe that Mr. Broadhead is Japanese. Contrary to your apparent belief, one need not be Japanese to support the interests of the Japanese teams.

And once again, and to my disbelief, you confuse teh terms "unanimous" with "majority". The majority rules. Which strongly united interests comprise the majority of the advisory board?

I give AMAPR a compliment for ignoring the blatantly absurd and biased recommendations of the advisory board but you are still wanting to argue about it. WTF??

JQ, if for whatever reason you need to believe that the advisory board is not controlled by the clear majority of solidly united Japanese team interests, you are free to do so, but it would be ridiculous.

"I'm betting, with the aid of time, that Buell perseveres."

Anyone who has spent more than fifteen minutes talking with Erik would be a fool to take that bet.

The XB12 is a stride firm and truly taken in the right direction. While a few may lament the stride not taken in the direction of a Japanese clone, I rejoice.

I have owned and enjoyed Japanese bikes over the years. My tastes have matured and my riding skills have improved and I now take more joy from the Ride than from the Race. The beauty of Buell is that it allows one to enjoy both.
