Ah, to be in the sunny skies of Daytona today...ahhhh! Too bad I am stuck here in the frigid skies of KY, with the winds howling around hard enough that it blew my 5' x 10' steel bed open trailer across my driveway and into my yard, while dragging the tongue! The trailer has a open mesh gate that drops down to make a ramp, that was in the up position. It was enough to make a sail for the wind to push the trailer with the trailer pointed directly into the wind.

It would be cool to see Shawn testing the Buell on the high banks...he was always one of my favorite racers, and I have followed him since the Fast By Ferracci Ducati days, through the Pro Thunder with the Tilley Buell team (where he battled Mike Smith on a Ducati 748), and then as a Superbike champ in Formula racing, and now as a MotoST racer. There is not a nicer guy out there! Go Shawn.

Will ebear be there to get some great photos?

Also interesting is Nate Kern on the BMW. Is this the Thunderbike/Moto ST R1200S or maybe a foray into FX with the HP2 Sport?

I think this is the answer.....HP2 Sport, complete with factory BMW techs : ) Very nice too.

Perhaps somebody with more knowledge of US racing classes etc can hazard a guess at which series this will run in? Too powerful for Thunderbikes (unless severely ballasted) so maybe FX, or is there a class for it in Moto ST?

Acording to this: http://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?artic le=30878

The Daytona 200 (Formula Xtreme) with a familiar name: Rico Penzkofer.

I really hope Buell doesn't give up on this class. With Japanese 600cc inline 4's vs. Air-cooled BMW's vs. Triumph 675's Vs. Ducati 749's etc., this has he potential to be a really interesting class.

. . . and Matt, the BMW could compete in MOTO ST, but they would have to de-tune it to 118 HP max. I don't know if that bike would be much different than what they competed with last year.

There may be some additionally improved suspension components etc., but they could probably just add those on to last years bikes . . . though they make a point of using the HP2 for marketing reasons.

This thread is starting to drift, but here's a good, detailed article on the HP2 for anybody who's interested:

http://www.gizmag.com/go/8108/

As much as I would like to see a variety of different bikes going head to head and love the idea of BMW getting into FX for that reason, I wonder if they've learned anything from Buell.

From the tire test times, they're going to have a very high hill to climb to be competitive.

They've been talking up this HP2 so much, what happens if it gets spanked by bikes with half its displacement? If it wins, will people be impressed by a 1200cc bike that is racing against 600cc competition?

Those are the same kind of questions that were asked of Buell, but I think, in a way, BMW has more to lose.

BMW's hardware is clearly better respected by the public now than Buell ever has been. Could that image take a hit from something like this?

If they really want to race FX, I'm curious why BMW didn't tune a 750 cc homologation version of the F800 S. Since it's a twin, I'd think it would be able to compete in Moto ST also.

Oh well. I guess I should just relax and enjoy, but I'm afraid if this doesn't work, it could start to put a nail in the coffin of truly divers bikes racing against each other.

Some background... Last year, BMW wanted to run in AMA FX, they had the riders, Kern and Parriot but got shot down by AMA when the bike that had been built for the US series was declared not legal for the class. So, this year, it looks like they are finally going to start their foray into AMA. Kern has been at the top of the ASRA/CCS charts on Beemers for a couple of years now. And if I recall, they didn't do too bad in Moto-ST.

As for Buell testing an 1125r.. Hmmmmm.. Perhaps it's a glimpse of things to come, we know the bike's not legal for AMA .. now.. but in '09 when they are supposed to go to 1200cc for Superbike Twins, (what WSBK is doing this year) .. well.. there could be a thought of an effort there. Buell has some good riders and nice folks riding their machines.. I've met a bunch of them and know that it wouldn't take much effort to get a line of Buell racers ready to take on the challenge.

As for the XBRR, I hope it's still being developed, it's taken it's first national win (officially) in a superbike class finally and I'm there has got to be good still in the machine.. They just needed time to start bringing it out..

It has a more powerful engine than the 1125r right?

Rico,Hinterreitter ,Nate and Brian are all hoping to run BMW's at Daytona...according to RRW...seems they are 5 seconds off the pace but you can bet they will make up alot of that!Since the premier race at the "Banks" is FX, alot of teams should be testing there and what could be better than that? I,for one, look forward to this race in particular since it shows such a diverse plethora of machines at the beginning of the season. Bodes well for the rest of the year so long as these teams stay at it and don't blow their wad right away and not return, like past years.Even though Shawn(also a favorite of mine,Jimidan!)is testing lets not get too excited until announcements are made...we know how much postulating has gotten us in trouble!!!

(of course, wishing and hoping is good for the long winter months, though!)

Wow,thats CRAZY Jimidan!!good thing no one was in the way!Just imagine, even though it's mesh, how much drag that gate must put on your vehicle while towing! I wish I was going to be down there for the testing , but who knows!Maybe I'll make the race this year....I haven't had any shots this last year for Dave Gesses Buell site and it bums me out!..Take care and stay off the driveway in the wind!

Elvis has left the building sez:

Buell gave up on AMA FX the year before last, but our main man Walt Sipp carried on the torch in a truly yeoman, yet underfunded, fashion last year. He redefined the term 'privateer' in that league. I have not heard whether he will be competing again in 08...any news on this? I think that the companies eggs have been switched over to the 1125R...too bad, because I really like the XBRR.

One would think that maybe with BMW throwing down the gauntlet with Buell's old nemesis N8 Kern at the wheel, that it may draw Buell back into the fray. Maybe.

Hello guy's. I'm not trying to thread-jack here so I'll keep it short. We will be back on the XBRR in some AMA races. At the moment it looks like Daytona, Mid-O, Road America and Miller (maybe more - who knows). We are also putting together another Thunderbike for ASRA competition. Thanks for the thoughts. I didn't ride particularly well last year so hopefully riding the Thunderbike with some old friends will ease the pressure.

I am impressed with the times Shawn ran at Daytona on the 1125. Obviously, he is a good rider but to run in the 45's with a belt drive, stock motor and exhaust is not too shabby. Most AMA Superstock and Superbikes will run in the 37's to 38's. Not too far off considering it was basically stock.

That's great to hear Walt!!

Don't be too hard on yourself. The AMA is the big time, and considering everything you had to deal with and the fact it was your first year competing at that level, you did well.

Good luck!!

I stand corrected. I guess I didn't have a Buell back then, and wasn't aware Pro-Thunder was part of the AMA.

. . . I think you'd agree though, with the factory money being put into Formula X-Treme, some great riders and times coming close to Superbike, Formula X-Treme is some seriously competitive racing.

Absolutely Elvis!!

The other series tend to be a bit Staid ,in my opinion, since you see the same old bikes with a merry-go-round of riders moving back and forth....
But when it comes to FX,we get an interesting mix of bikes with a variety of riders whom we don't always see in the AMA circus. What could be better?....well....maybe a Twins only series to replace Superstock or even to run along side...or even eliminate Supersport since the 600 already run in FX and create an HP grouped multi-series like Moto-St so theres a variety of smaller power bikes showing their best along side some brands that cant afford huge racing budgets.....wouldn't it be COOL to see ,say a Moto-Guzzi alongside a Bimota with a URAL catching up?????OK...that may be a bit much but you get the idea..VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE..!!!!In all things , if you don't HAVE a choice then life becomes boring...!

So Elvis....will we be meeting you at the races next season?..There could be some interesting battles this year if some people campaign the 1125's!!

I hope to get out to some races. I'm trying to talk a couple friends into doing some road trips with me, but we'll probably have to do some traveling.

I'm in Jersey, so there isn't too much close. I may go down to VIR, and I've never made the pilgrimage to homecoming, but that's probably the one to do. It's just going to take a few days if we ride.

I'm also thinking about Daytona, but I'd probably just fly down for that if I do.

Has Moto-ST finalized their schedule yet?
