Thursday went pretty good!Got the X1 into the finals and beat an evil bagger to take the money class win. Leah had a little trouble, as she was running my bike in the womans class, and the damn fuel tank vent line pinched just as she was going up to the line, and the bike died in the burnout box! We didn't figure it out until she missed her run...luckily we caught the problem right before my final run, so it sucked for her but it saved my bacon. Nancy did really well, advancing to the woman's final. A lot of Buells were out so that was really cool, and Jason went a number of rounds as well. Was a riot and great to see all the Buells out there for sure, and it is definitely a huge highlight of my season to be able to win one during homecoming! Do it again a week from thursday!

I was running about a 10.80 flat at 124mph. The air was really bad, very hot and humid. It cooled down at night, but then it got windy and was pretty much a headwind. The bike will run low 10.70's in better air, and the tire on it is pretty smoked. My 60 ft times weren't too good, so I'm hoping it will do 10.60's next week with a new tire and better weather.

I think Nancy was going high 11's. Can't remember what Jason dialed in at...

What mods do you have that took you into the 10's Leah? What was Nancy using to get in the 11's?

Scott... Leah is actually Wes aka Racerx1 and his bike is well I'll let Wes chime in for that but mostly stock parts Tuber/XB engine. Nancy run's a stock XB12R that is lowered and a strut plus wheelie bar.

Hey Scott,

Yea, as Dana mentioned, my bike is a 1999 X1 converted to carburetor. I have a 7" over swingarm (no wheelie bar), and the bike is lowered with a strut. The front end is completely stock, but the forks are raised up in the trees about 3 inches in order to lower the front end and i run clip ons instead of a handlebar. As far as the engine goes I ran it for 3 years with a completely stock X1 bottom end, including the cams (The engine has never been out of the chassis!). It has XB heads I ported (WFO Engineering), and stock XB9 pistons and a 44mm Keihin carb. The bike would consistently go mid 10.90's at 122mph, occassionally a high 10.80, and an all time best of 10.77. It duynoed at 101hp in this config. I went through the top end this winter, not because it was running bad but because I had 512 passes on the engine and I was sure something needed replacing! When I took it apart, everything looked outstanding although there was a lot of piston skirt wear. Being a tinker, I put in new Wiseco XB9 pistons (11.7:1 when combined with a 1200 crank), did a very thin valve seat 5 angle valve job, and tried the screaming eagle .575 lift cam. I only have 2 weekends on it, but it has already gone 10.72 @125mph. Haven't dynoed it yet, but I'm guessing its close to 107-110hp. I had to go 3 teeth bigger on the rear sprocket as it lost some mid range, and it still isn't 60 footing better than the last combination yet. Between the loose piston clearance Wiseco recommends and the big cams, there is a lot of mechanical noise to the motor. In a lot of ways, I prefer the stock piston/B cam motor, but I want to see how fast I can go with it as a true 1200cc engine.

Thanks WES, nice numbers! I've done a best of 11.66 @ 114 with stock, stock, stock 99 S3 with a front end strap (ok "race" ecm, slip on a ham can - I consider that tuning not mods...)
I do believe you, but I can't believe that the XB heads and XB9 pistons add that much - how necessary is the carb? I wouldn't be against the heads and pistons, but would keep my FI : )

Hey Scott, those are good numbers for an S3! As far as my engine is concerned, the XB heads, the porting, the valve job, and the increased compression, along with a decent pipe were worth 15hp (my X1 made 86hp stock with a race muffler). We have put together a couple of these motors for road racing, including Jason on this board, and they all come in between 96 and 102rwhp for the most part. Honestly, the engine is really nothing special and the majority of the good ET/MPH is all in the chassis getting it to work and being able to take advantage of all the power. I look at it this way: If your drag racing your bike, and your not at 100% throttle at any point in time during your run, then you are leaving something on the table in terms of the chassis set up. Addressing that is usually worth a whole hell of a lot more than an extra 5 or 10hp...

I was running essentially this same motor in my old S1 road racer (with a Buell race pipe) with full suspension travel, and it ran a best of a wheelie limited 11.35 at 117mph. My XB12 road racer with the same engine part combination in Road race trim ran a wheelie limited 11.10 @ 125mph, so that kind of gives you an idea of how much the chassis stuff is worth. If you can get your S3 into the low 11's and still street ride it, that would be a hell of an accomplishment, and to run an 11.66 as is means you know what you are dooing when it comes to riding that thing!

Thanks for the tips and kind words Wes : )
I refuse to take apart a perfectly good running motor, but when the time comes you have given me a good direction to go!
The only thing I might do between now and then is an airshifter - should let me get into the 11.4's.....

10.684 @ 124.5mph last weekend at Kaukaukana! spooned on a burned up Pirelli medium road race dot and that helped 60ft, although its still a little short of what it was doing with the B cams.

hey so what are your 60ft times. I was surprised, with my 60ft on my 06 XB9SX I pulled a best 1.9 but I was pretty disapointed with the time of 12.6 @ 106mph (I dont have the slip in front of me but I will get the exact numbers later) my race weight was 616lbs I think the two biggest factors that slowed me down in the big end was I am 6'4" and was wearing a larger jacket, and I was running right to redline, and I think I should be short shifting it. The bike is bone stock except an open air box mod,

Any thoughts??

Yo Punk,

this year, the bike has yet to break a 1.60 60 ft time, including the 10.60 runs...last year with the 'B' cams I got a best of 1.573 60 ft. Trying to get back there, went 3 teeth taller on the rear but it just isn't making the torque down low anymore. Not a huge deal, as with the lack of wheelie bar and the current bike set up, it was on the verge of the wheelie limit.

12.6 sounds about right for a 9 and those conditions. The est I have ever seen was a corrected 11.81 @112

Hey Punkid when did you go to NED? Shoulda let me known - I'm just a couple of miles away....
Short shifting with worth a try, I have my best times short shifting! Also, it will get faster again when the nice fall air rolls in. Lots of time to get more runs in!

This is for you Wes....

Yea I was gonna let you guys know on the NEBO board, but It was so up in the air with the weather on saturday. we actually left knowing that it would eventually rain. I ended up getting stuck their cause I waited to long and a big rain storm came through. I then left as it passed, but I still got cought in multiple down poors the whole ride home. Soaked, to dry, back to Soaked. Not very fun.

So it was probably better I did not drag everyone up their. haha
