I found this photo on the web a while ago and wondered if anyone knew anything about this particular bike?
It appears to have an Evo Sportster/Buell engine fitted and a combined oil tank/oil cooler at the front. It has XR1200 written under the Harley logo on the tank.
Other than that, and that I believe it to be Eurpean in origin, I know nothing about it.

Any ideas?

Matt,

Has Jens seen that pic? I believe that's a German origin bike. I've got the same pic and maybe one other of same bike different angle.

I'll look when I get home.

I was recently gifted a book, The Harley-Davidson Century, that has pretty good overview of the H-D racing programs. An XR-1200 is not seen in the photos or mentioned anywhere in the book.

And none of the factory racers had similar tanks, fairings, or body work to the one in your photo either.

There was a XR-1000 Sportster made in 1983 that had a hybrid engine with XR-750 cylinder heads and special cylinders on an XL (normally 61 cu/in) engine. That engine had the carbs on the right and exhaust ports to the left. At $7,000 each they did not sell well either. They cost about double the price of a Sportster and only had about 10 HP more. The book says they "broke early and often".

The book also mentions in the section on Buell that the engine in the Buell RR-1000 was the engine from the "ill fated" XR-1000.

No answers, but maybe some trivia or clues?

Jack
