Well it sucks but what can I say other then the Buell's DNF'd. Something we're used to by now. The Hal's Dan Balansky bike and Walt Sipp. Sorry guy's for the bad luck. I'll be there tomorrow but I'm glad I wasn't there for the FX race.

I think in this case it is a bit unfair to say that "the Buell's DNF'd" and it is "Something we're used to by now".

Walt finished the Daytona 200 and Hals has an excellent reliability record in FX going back years. For that matter, Walt has an excellent reliability record as well. These guys usually finish races, so I am not used to it when the don't.

I will bet that it was something simple that took both bikes out after qualifying so well, considering the weather.

Dave,

Yeah I got pretty wet for sure but Oh Well.

Jimidan,

I'm pretty sure that I'm aware of Hal's track record and in Pro Thunder they do great but in FX they have had poor results over a period now of 3 years and 04 being there best. Something Simple you say??? Probably isn't it always....simple problems costs races to.

I was there for the race. As a matter of fact I was out on the starting grid with Walt Sipp!!

I was hangin' around the Hal's pit, and Walt asked them for some help because he was there by himself. I had been talking with Terry G. from Hal's for most of Friday and Saturday morning so Terry said "How about this guy," and pointed at me. Walt said it was cool with him so I grabbed a wrench and away I went.

At race time I got to go over the wall with stands, starter and tire warmers. Then came the race, what a disappointment!!

Bilansky had been having problems with the slipper clutch all weekend and had to go back to the stock clutch for the race. He made it 2 or 3 laps and the Dynojet quick shifter broke.

Walt had brake problems on the 2nd lap and ran off in the chicane. Then a couple laps later he was coming out of turn 3 and got on the gas and the engine went "BANG" and quit.

I had a blast helping out and a big thanks goes out to Walt Sipp. He is a genuinely nice guy and I really appreciated the opportunity to get my feet wet in the racing game.

Sweet! Too bad it didn't go better. Kind of hard for a guy to race at the AMA level with no help. That just ain't right!

Sorry to hear this, I crewed for Walt at Daytona this year, he is a great guy! Race preparation is essential. Terry G knows. Couldn't be there to help, Jamesgang Racing busy getting ready for upcoming races.
Just shows you how the life of a privateer is....tough!
So when you see them struggling... offer to lend a hand, you never know what it can lead to!: )

All that happened to Walt's bike was a failed ignition pickup sensor. The bang was the backfire of a big ignition hit at the wrong time. Put in a new pickup and it runs perfect. Unfortunately that was after the race was over.

And the first time we've ever seen one of those darned quick shift modules come apart too. Aaarrgghh.

Aaaarrrgghh is right!! After all the work the Hal's crew did to rebuild the clutch and transmission on Bilansky's bike to be foiled by a purchased part just blows!!

And if all that went wrong with Walt's bike was the ignition pickup, that's an even bigger bummer!!

If there's 2 things I love it's wrenchin' and racin', so it was just the icing on the weekend to be able to help!!

Walt was there alone?

That my badweb friends, we have to fix. There ought not to be a race anywhere this year where Walt does not have at least 3 people standing around waiting to hear what they should go get, carry off, clean up, or bring to eat.

I race a XBRR for liberty hd-buell and i really don't think the bike need a quick shifter. the trans is so smooth that it just takes i quick blip of the wrist and thats it. the quick shifter is just one more thing to go wrong. as for the slipper clutch we have over 250 miles on ours with no problems. but then again im not bilansky.

Yes, it is too bad the we both broke. I think we both would have been in the top twenty for sure. Thanks to Ben for being such a huge help.

As Anony pointed out, mine wasn't a terminal failure, but an electrical component. In fairness to my bike though, that is the same motor (untouched) I raced the 200 on as well as Topeka so that baby's got some miles on it. The speed and durability are definitely coming around.

As far as the slipper clutch and electric shifter. They do sound somewhat trivial and problematic, but let me put it into perspective. If I didn't have the shifter and slipper I would be around a second slower per lap. That's big. The problem Dan had was extremely rare. As for the clutch, I put in new plates after every session. However, Buell/STM/Alto are working on making them last longer.

Walt, I just booked a flight to arrive at Salt Lake City on Saturday at 12:35PM from my son's graduation in Laramie, WY. I'd like to help you pit at Miller for the race. Sorry that I can't get there any earlier, but hope that helps...Miller is about 45 minutes away from SLC...should be at the track at about 2:00pm...

After experiences I had working with DJet when I was in that side of the industry, I wouldn't trust one of their parts on my bike. A different route that many teams use is a strain gaged shift rod with an amplifier. At least if the gage goes bad the rod still works.

BLNT

Cheers
