Saturday was the first Track Day event I've gone to. In fact it was only the second ride on my new Buell. My goal for the day was to learn how to ride this bike I picked up over the winter. I had a Shadow Spirit street bike prior to this winter so I figured that there would be a learning curve and what better way to straighten out the curve than learning in a controlled environment. I had no idea how much fun I would have. Despite the fact that the temp was 29 deg at the drivers meeting. I think it warmed up to 32 by the first session. I felt fairly comfortable after the first 2 sessions of the day and really learned a great deal about how well the Bolt handled in the afternoon sessions. I was really pleased with its composure on the not so smooth surface of Pocono.

I finally did my first track day about a month ago.I would highly recommend for anyone doing their first track day that they find a venue where there is some kind of limit on passing in the 'novice' class. Unless you're already fast or fearless (of which I am no longer either), its unnerving to have your line taken away, anytime, anywhere, on the track.

Otherwise, its a hellovalotta fun and addicting...

Yeah, the streets never gonna look the same again for sure.

This was through NESBA ( www.nesba.com ) and it was well run. Drivers meeting before everything began, B - Class (beginner) was passing only on a straight. Only thing that sucked about that was the in line 4's were able to drag race down the back stretch. No skills but they know how to twist a throttle. Then you're stuck behind them in the turns. I did learn that you can out brake many of those guys going into a turn. I - Class (Intermediate) was able to pass in straights and on the outside of a turn. A - Class (Advanced) was open to pass anywhere.

"B - Class (beginner) was passing only on a straight" That would have made for a much nicer day, but I guess with 30+ riders on the track, they didnt want the slower riders holding everybody up!
Sounds like you found a great venue.

Sounds like you had a good time anyway. I'd try to find an organization that has some rules on passing by class. I think that is essential in keeping things safe for everyone. There were numerous time I could have passed on a turn but it probably would have been dangerous for both parties looking back at it. Much safer to out brake someone or our drag them (didn't happen too often) down the back stretch. I plan on signing up for another as soon as I can figure out the next free weekend I can sneak away.

The difference between careful preparation and and irrational addiction can be pretty subtle. Here is an example of a guy that may be "over prepping" a little:

Or who knows, maybe it was his day to watch the kids?

Ok, I'm signed up for another track day and I'm also on the waiting list for a third. Just got back from Deals Gap and I'm also going back down to DG end of June. My wife's gonna shoot me dead.
