Hi,
I have been getting ready to visit the salt and try my hand at the USFRA 130mph class.
I moved to Colorado a few years back and i'm finally getting enough money behind me to make the short trip.

I have read as much as i can get my hands on, registration forms and rules (online) i have a set of full racing leathers a 55tooth rear belt sprocket (15% overdrive) for my XB.
Any other advice for a newbie?

Here are a couple of places to starts.

http://www.teamelves.com/Bonneville/r_y_o.shtml

http://www.teamelves.com/Bonneville/general_info.s html

http://www.teamelves.com/Bonneville/accomodations. shtml

There are a couple of Buell related land speed racers that hang out on www.sacborg.com as well. You could contact them and see when they're planning on heading out and maybe hook up.

IIRC,the biggest barrier Paul Rogers faced on his XB 12R was the rev limiter limiting speed.
His first year --P/PP 1350 125.243
the next with race module with different rev-limit--- P PP 1350 140.292
You will not have any bodywork to hide behind and as Bonneville is at 4400' elevation you will need some extra HP to pull those tall gears.
SCTA has some unique requirements for their leathers--nothing but leather--no kevlar, etc inserts, very limited ventilation holes allowed behind knees/armpits,the less the better,so be aware.Other than that it is pretty easy prep.
You could always come to the Bub's event, motorcycle only, all styles of leathers allowed, similar costs and set-ups.

That's good info FMJ. I hadn't considered the idea my 2 piece firstgear vented leathers
wouldn't meet SCTA rules.

I intend to give it a go on the salt one of these years. It's a long term goal of mine.

So BUB it is for me, when the time comes.

Aren't they less stringent with the leather requirements for the 130 Club?

Can't say for sure, but somehow doubt the SCTA rules would vary.
But we can always e-mail Ellen Wilkinson at the USFRA.

Henrik,
I think you are correct.
They didn't check my leather very close for the 130 club but really gave Richards the close look.
That may have changed whe SCTA changed the rules in 05.

Update: Just checked USFRA's web site. Here's the line for the 130 club.
" Motorcycle riders must wear full leathers, either one piece or zip together waist, including leather boots and leather gloves."

It doesn't indicate if the new "solid leather" rules must be followed.

Thanks all.
FMJ, I have a chain conversion in the works for the gearing (2.08). In SCTA production frame class, would one be stuck with the stock pulleys? of just "stock looking" with the required safety chain guard mods? I was planning to go to Bub's as well depending on the timing. I know some guys who will be going from around here. so i may just go to watch.

Overall it seems like the rules for the USFRA 130mph were built to bring street cars and bikes in. The entry fee is low (around $200).
I hope that i won't have to spend $700 on a new set of leather to make 5 runs (or till the bug bites)
i realistically don't expect to succeed the first time out. Because that mean i have to have more work done to my bike for more power. which would be really too bad
Right?

The 150mph club seemed much more in line with the SCTA rules.

It's kinda funny, i ride at an even higher altitude than the flats, so testing out my rig should be slower here (1000 feet higher) than there. sort of the opposite of most other people.

Lucky, just send off an e-mail to Ellen and ask about leathers. And I sopped around on eBay and found a nice Vanson 1 piece for my son for 90.00 and a 2 piece (cannot remember) set for myself for 125.00. So shop around the deals are there.
If you are thinking of entering a class for more runs, you can always run MPS.

FMJ,
Thanks for the info and those are some great deals.

Anybody got any other hints and suggestions?
i have:
05-XB12Scg
Full factory race kit
2.08 gears (sitting in the garage)
crossroads -7degree bars for easier tuck
no passenger gear
snell 2000 helmet
leathers (maybe ok)
gloves
tape
and absolutely no experience on salt

so i guess it's rated tires and steering damper between now and then.

p.s. the team elves website was very informative.}

Most radials we run are Z rated so no problem there. Remember you need metal valve stem caps and in class racing and 150 club you will need metal valve stems.
Just before your runs pry your disc pads away from the disc so you have no friction-- and then don't touch em in the staging lanes, take off your knee pucks and toe pucks from leathers and boots, you want to be smooth.Lower your bike as much as possible, run high air pressure in tires so footprint is smallest--I even searched for the smallest section tires for front and rear, wide is not your friend. When you run you will want to search for the best body position, arch your back, point your toes, in,watch the tach, for every little increase in rpm you will get a little more speed.
Check your wheel bearings, worn ones will have more drag. I went with ceramic bearings front and rear
