Greetings all,

I just started prepping an XB12R for CCS competition. What are you folks using for a catch can? I was interested in the Norris Performance can is too small to meet the rules.

I had a nice chat with Henry Duga, Monday, and he was SO helpful! We're really lucky to have him as a resource!

DaveS helped me aquire my Buell number plate and belly pan which arrived yesterday.

I've had a chance to visit with Paul James and several other Buell racers at Blackhawk during the June and July races and everyone was very helpful and supportive of my desire to join them (read: follow them). Thanks to all of them also.

Needless to say I'm really stoked about hitting the track, hopefully at the September race at Blackhawk.

Any other thoughts any of you veterans have to help me prepare for my first race, I'm all ears. I will say that I've done several track days up to this point but I realize racing is a whole different level.

I can't wait!!

A small baby bottle with a larger x cut in the nipple so the hose will go through works fine.
Loop safety wire around the neck to secure it wherever you decide to put it. We used one of those on our old sv racer.

Tech has not hit us on the volume of the drummer/norris catch can. Anyone else running one without issue?

BTW Henry Rocks! He spends a lot of time on the road to follow the circuit. If you race ASRA on a Buell you WILL see Henry. He'll hunt you down
and introduce himself, and let you know where to find him (but he never holds still for long) He is dedicated!

We use the Norris catch can on our race bike, although the rules are probably different over here I suppose. To be honset it hardly collects any moisture and certainly no oil, and just needs to be drained once per weekend just in case.

From my experience of race scrutineers if you tuck it up out of the way they don't ask to see it ;)

We get asked every meeting if we have lock wired our sump plug, and if we have just plain water in the cooling system! I'm thinking of getting a large sticker made with 'THIS IS AN AIR COOLED MOTORCYCLE AND DOESN'T HAVE A SUMP PLUG' made up. I might get another one that reads 'THE EXHAUST IS UNDERNEATH!' while I'm at it : )

Diablo sez: "A small baby bottle with a larger x cut in the nipple so the hose will go through works fine."

The baby bottle also serves as a direct reminder of where all of that money you are spending on the bike and racing should be going.

Er ah, Trojan, your sump plug on a Buell is on the primary...which must be safety wired too.

Not on our bike it isn't. We have an open belt drive primary : )

Me too... What about cooling the trans though? That's the only thing I'm worried about.

I'm interested in the clutch.

Do you use stock clutch friction discs?

Are they grabby, do they overheat, and how long do they last?

The transmission is sealed by welding the crankcase and fitting sealed bearings. There is then a new oil drain fitted for the transmission. The trans is filled through the speedo sensor fitting with 500ml of top quality synthetic racing transmission oil and we have had no issues with the gearbox all year.

Clutch plates are not stock but are similar. The clutch action is far better and lighter than stock and not at all grabby. The clutch utilises a Soft Clutch device for still lighter action. Clutch plates have so far lasted us all season with no apparent wear. : )
Being a dry clutch it is pretty noisy when you pull the lever in though. Very much like a Ducati.

The coolest thing about the belt primary (apart from saving over 5 kg that is) is the noise it makes on track. Because we use the front exit exhaust that usually faces away from the grandstands and is pretty quiet anyway, what you hear is the whine of the belt primary on the overrun. This sounds like a cross between a supercharger and a jet fighter, so has the crowd scratching their heads trying to figure out what the bike is : )
