With the Daytona tire test going on, I thought I would ask if anyone has heard whether or not Buell is planning on participating in the the 2006 AMA FX schedule.

The Buell teams don't run Dunlop tires, which is who sponsored the testing this weekend at Daytona, thus only those folks running Dunlop tires were able to participate.

The rumor is that Buell will be doing something interesting for Daytona.

I knew that they wouldn't be at the Dunlop tests, but other than them getting rained out of testing at Daytona back in October, I hadn't heard anything else. Then I read this...

http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2005/Dec/e/n051212b.htm

Does anyone know about the "infamous Buell Formula Xtreme shakedown."?

When will Mike Hale be riding the Buell for the first time? Do Buell's racing teams have any test scheduled as a group in the near future?

"AMA Pro Racing sources said this week that based on the fact that the rules for an air-cooled Twin in Formula Extreme are so wide, and allow for so many modifications, that it is their belief that the XBRR is legal for the Formula Extreme class.

The relevant question seems to be this: where is the XBRR streetbike this machine is based on?"

XB12R is the answer.

Henry Duga is a walking encyclopedia of racing regulations & rules for many classes, and he was integral in producing this machine. I don't think he would let Buell make this bike only to be disqualified before the first race.

The CBR that Duhamel & Zemke raced was based on the production model, however, THAT was no street bike. Perhaps the fact that the XBRR has it's own model designator, where as other manufacturers use production designators, is what is causing this question.

It would seem pretty straight forward. If you can get to the XBRR by making modifications to an XB12R within the rules of allowed modifications for AMA FX, then the XBRR is legal. It matters not whether the factory does the modifications or the race teams prep the bikes in the aftermarket. Buell may have made the mistake of building 50 units, making it look like they were attempting to homologated a new bike rather than FX race prep an XB12R.

The FX rule book says for air cooled twin cylinder motorcycles under engine modications "Engine Modifications are unlimited". That pretty much says it all. So the engine mods and all the other mods are allowed under FX rules.

From Cycle News:

"ROAD RACING - Buell Assault on Daytona 200
By Henny Ray Abrams
Challenging the Four's 1/31/2006

Look for Buell to return to the AMA Superbike Championship's Formula Xtreme class with a big splash in this year’s Daytona 200 with four dealer-supported teams.

The weapon of choice is the new limited edition, race ready Buell XBRR, which will be thoroughly tested before the March 11 race.

Among the tests of the pre-production models is one scheduled for Feb. 7-10 at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas. The track, with its two-mile banked oval and numerous configurations, comes closest to approximating the g-forces of the high banks of Daytona, where testing is at a premium, especially this time of year.

And who to ride them? Though all the names could not be confirmed, two that are certain, according to sources inside Buell, are Ulsterman Jeremy McWilliams, who has extensive MotoGP experience, aboard a Warr’s H-D/Buell of London-sponsored entry and long-time Hal’s H-D/Buell rider Mike Ciccotto, both of whom tested at Daytona in early December. That was Buell’s second Daytona test. They also tested not long after the season-ending Formula USA/Championship Cup Series events at Daytona.

Texan Mike Hale has been previously announced as a rider for a team backed by Innovative Motorcycle Research, Millville Harley-Davidson/Buell, and Classic Harley-Davidson/Buell. But, because of the production schedule for the XBRR, the team may not have its equipment in time for the 200.

In announcing the new race bike last week, Buell Motor Company said they would “produce 50 XBRR motorcycles with a short initial run in late February and the balance made in April. U.S. MSRP is $30,995.”"

Ooooo! Oooooo! Gotta go see it! Wonder if they'll let me?

There's a big thread on the bike and its development in the current RoadracingWorld magazine.

The cases and engine internals are definitely not stock based!

It ought to be an interesting race to watch.

There are a couple of other Buell riders in that list, but probably won't be riding XBRRs.

There are 203 entrys on the FX list, versus 110 last year before the Daytona 200. There were 91 people to show up last year to qualify, but the limit of the 200 is capped at 80 riders, regardless of the 110% rule.

Interesting to see Neil Hodgson and both the Bostrom brothers names on the list. I wonder what Ducati have planned for Neil then?

Probably nothing for Ben and Neil. Eric will be campaigning the entire FX season for Yamaha.

Ducati would like Ben and Neil to win the Daytona 200, which would be a first for Ducati. It would also be a first for B-Boz, E-Boz, and Neil Hodgson.

They have to get around Mat Mladin, Miguel Duhamel, Jake Zemke and Jason DiSalvo though. That might be tough to do on a Ducat 749.

The only thing that would upset Suzukis plans to win, is if Yamaha flew in Valentino Rossi to ride an R6.

That might really put the Daytona on the map again, like it hasn't been in a decade.

Maybe Ducati has an air cooled 1000 modified for the 200? Now that would be a surprise!
