Well the kids are growing up,The bills are paid up and the boss (wife) say's I can GO! I am loading the
S3T in my truck and leaving Michigan on 3/8/06 and driving south until it gets warm enough to ride.
The goal is to see as much of the racing as possible and put some miles on the BUELL.(IBA member I ride A LOT )
I have not been to Daytona in 25 years so any input will be appreciated. Can I get in the pits ? Things to see? I read somewhere they look for corner workers to work the race? I don't have a motel yet? Any Buell or BRAG events going on?
I am going by myself but if someone else want's to go I have an enclosed trailer? (one more bike)
Thanks Jack

I'll be there next weekend getting my ass kicked on the Daytona speedway. I'm racing in the CCS Ultralight Superbike and GT Light classes. Friday and Saturday come on out and watch some real racing, not those panzy AMA guys.

Buell has a couple of events on their site, probably test ride stuff. HD of Daytona is brand new and right off I-95, now, it will probably be the hot spot this year. It's huge! Looks like it's own mall. The dyno drags down near Carl's will be good.

What do I have to do to get in the pits?
Anyone need an extra crew member : )
I have been around circle track (car) racing
all my life and would love to get close to the
race bikes.
Thanks Jack

Wow, what a weekend, the weather was perfect. What a rush to be on the high banking of Daytona on a bike. It was kind of intimidating at first but you eventually get use to it. Also, it was cool to see some of the factory pro riders out there in a few races practicing for the Daytona 200.

Friday I placed 7th in the Am GT Lights race, Saturday I placed 2nd in the Am. Ultralight Superbike race.

Way to go Mike! Would you kindly care to give us a play by play of some of your most memorable moments on the track? : )

Sure Blake,

Arrived at the track Thursday morning to meet my buddy riding in the Team Hammer school. He low sided in the morning session but had minimal damage to the bike and was able to race the weekend. I got set up in the pits about 10:30 and teched the bike about 1:00 pm.

Friday was morning practice and my first time on the track. The infield was pretty much like any other track but once you approach the banking you are like "Oh sh**, I'm riding Daytona." The first practice session I did about 5 laps to get use to the track and stayed low on the banking. By the second session I felt considerably more comfortable and ran faster lap times. On the banking you are horizontal to the ground and lifting your head up looking forward you only see asphalt. It's a rush. One of the best moments was going wide open, tucked down and reading "Daytona" painted on the wall. Very surreal.

Saturday you get one short practice session before the racing schedule starts. In the Ultralight race it was myself and an FZR400 up front. The FZ has about 20 more hp than my KTM but it makes up for that in better brakes and weight. Once we hit the banking the FZR would walk away from me. I did manage to regain the lead on the 2nd lap going into turn 1 but after the 3rd lap I could not catch him again. About half way through the race my chain slider tab broke off and pushed my chain against my wheel and tire. It felt like I hit the rev limiter but I was in the infield and no where near the upper rpms. I rolled back the throttle, and at the time, I did not know what happened. The bike responded back to normal and I was back on the gas. Finally I see the checkered flag and proceed to the cool down lap. I see the guy who came in first pulled over and give him the thumbs up for a good race, we punch fists and ride back to the pits.

It's relatively expensive and a pain in the ass for the amount of track time you get, but being able to ride Daytona was worth every penny.

Mike, my Dad and I watched you on the track. He runs a 525 here at Loudon. Running that thing down the back stretch is a harrowing experience, eh?

We talked with the other guy from NY out there on the black KTM. I'm jealous of both of you!
