This is one of the most exciting Superbike races in memory. Higbee 6th! Whoohoo! Barnes and Cicotto 13th and 14th! And the RALLY cool thing... fellow CMRA racer, 2002 Amateur champion in 7 classes, fixing to be 2003 Expert champion in 7 classes riding his GSXR750 to a 22nd place finish in his first ever AMA Superbike race.

Buell, if you are looking to hire a VERY promising roadracer, now is the time to sign Mr. Sanchez. This is a guy who has not missed a race in two years and runs all seven MW/HW/UL races run in the Supersport, Superbike, and GP classes at every single CMRA event. It truly is a hurculean effort. This guy is going all the way. No doubt. Put him on an FX Buell and watch.

Way to go Michael!

It's hard for me to believe after 7 years of racing Buell's! Our team (Eastside Harley Bellevue Wa.) Finished WMRRA's 8hr "Superbike shoot-out" Without a hitch. No oil leaks no problem. The only thing that slowed us down that was a problem was our aftermarket belly pan broke a bracket. Our team took 5th in our class and 17th overall. We just bearly finished ahead of the team from Downtown HD. They were about 5 laps down from us. These new Buell XB's are excellent bikes as proven this weekend! 8hrs of continuous riding around a roadrace course is tough for any bike.

Anyone else at the CCS/F-USA races in Daytona last weekend? I like this brand of racing much more than AMA racing...the range of bikes out there was great, and nosin' around people's pit areas was fun. I've never seen so many loud and burly Buells in one place. To make a long story short, there was one death as bikes collided and a rider ran straight into the wall coming out of turn 4, and the Hoban Brothers were really cool as far as lettin' us check out their equipment and what not.

Anyway, Michael Barnes won Thunderbike on a borrowed old CBR 600F2, Hal's Daniel Bilansky got second on one of their trick XB's, and Hoban Brothers Jeff Johnson came in third on an old S1. Considering the budget and machines out there, you gotta hand it to the Hoban Brothers team.

For those of you talking smack about the BMW Boxer Cup bikes ability in Thunderbike, the one Boxer entry finished 9th (Nathan Kern carrying the #3 plate). BTW, the Beemers will be in Daytona again come March...so that one time event deal was a load of crap.

A few Buells did pretty well in Lightweight GT, Supertwins, and a couple other classes...but I don't remember the particulars. A guy was out racing an MV Agusta and placed 2nd in the team challenge race. Ya gotta love that.

I missed the Supermono and Supermotard races...but I guess there's always next year...

Buell rider Bryan Bemisderfer wins Daytona FUSA LW GP Expert, narrowly defeating Honda RS250 racer John France!

Buell riders SWEEP 1st four places of Daytona FUSA Thunderbike! Way to go Dave Estok, Bryan Bemisderfer, Josepeh, Rozynski, and Kurt Miller. Kudos to BMW rider Brian Parriot for a hard fought 5th place. Hats of to young Jason Kosko for an impressive 10th place. How cool is that... Buells, Suzis, and Beemers, three very different machines all mixing it up together.

The disheartening news is that three Buells DNF'd. Would be interesting to learn why exactly.

Bummer, no Buells in FUSA Sportbike race at Daytona

Pegram 1st, Higbee 2nd, CMRA veteran John Haner 3rd in FUSA Unlimited GP Expert in an elbow to elbow finish. Way to go Sean, and John!

FUSA class entries:

25 in Thunderbike: 15 Buells, 8 SV's, 2 BMW's, no singles, triples, 12 year old IL4's or two strokes.

Only 14 entries in Formula Sportbike: 12 GSXR750's, 1 R6, 1 Ducati 916 Twin.

46 in Sportbike, 46 watercooled 636cc or less IL4's, no Singles, Twins, Triples or Two strokes.

27 in Superbike, 26 watercooled IL4's, one Ducati 748 twin.

The only class that's even close to living up to the rules as written is Thunderbike.

I'm not sure what you mean to say by "living up to the rules"? I think all the bikes in all the classes are meeting the rules requirements.

Are you implying that you see a problem when certain configurations of machine are not excluded from a class but none are entered to race?

What is great is that if someone desires to race one of the other configurations of machines... they are not excluded from doing so. Cool eh?

I'm surprised that no air cooled Ducs or Guzzis have entered the Thunderbike fray.

I have heard that the Guzzi MGS-01 was not homologated properly per AMA. They planned on bringing 50 of the CORSA series in for race teams, but AMA said they must be DOT certified and for sale in dealers. I am sure I'm misrepresenting the situation, but that is the gist of it. They should have sold a few in Poland.

It's called the real world, Blake, you can write the rules any way you want, but teams will choose bikes that will be the most cost effective and competitive for each class every time, just human nature really.

So a racing team from a Ducati dealership will choose to race a Buell in Thunderbike instead of their own air cooled model? : ? I know, you are talking about the private racers. I wonder how many entries are from private racers and how many are dealer teams. At the FUSA national level, I'm thinking that the majority are tied to a dealership.

THREE TIME AMA SUPERBIKE CHAMPION DOUG CHANDLER TO RACE DUCATI 749R IN AMA FORMULA EXTREME

HMC Ducati Milwaukee Racing pairs up with Ducati and three time AMA Superbike champion Doug Chandler for their 2004 Formula Extreme effort.

Doug Chandler will race a Ducati 749R in the AMA Formula Extreme championship for 2004. The 749R was released last month and is the most technologically advanced Ducati ever.

HMC Ducati Milwaukee Racing is excited to be involved with both Chandler and Ducati. Mitch Hansen, team owner of HMC, has a history of winning with Ducati. In 1999 and 2000, HMC raced a 748RS in the now extinct AMA Pro Thunder class, winning the championship in 1999 with Shawn Conrad. In 2002, Doug Chandler rode a Ducati 998RS for HMC finishing the season with 3 podiums. Excited about the future of the new team, Mitch Hansen said, “I feel that the team we assembled with Doug and the 749R is capable of getting on the podium and winning consistently through the year. We’ve entered the season late but we know that anything can happen in racing and we hope to pull off the championship”

The 39-year-old California resident, Chandler, is a well-respected, accomplished racer. He has already won the AMA Superbike Championship three times and raced four years in Grand Prix. Chandler says he is excited to be on a Ducati again, “I’m really looking forward to Barber, its too bad we didn’t get to start the season in Daytona but I know we can go out there and win races. And I’m really excited to be back to roadracing especially on the Ducati.” Chandler’s first race with the 749R will be at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama on May 14-16.

The Ducati 749R is technically the most advanced twin-cylinder bike ever produced. It features a short stroke engine and the revolutionary testastretta head design. This bike was designed to mark Ducati’s return to World Supersport racing but will be extremely competitive in the US-based Formula Extreme class.

Looking at those moto gp speeds, can you even imagine hitting 202.2 on the straight and having to figure out how to get a better drive cause you're 25th. Those guys and those teams are amazing.

We've lost a great racer and competitor. Sad news...

According to www.mcnews.com.au, veteran racer Kirk McCarthy has died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash August 15 during round six of the Australian Superbike Championship at Queensland Raceway in Australia.

McCarthy won the 2002 AMA Pro Thunder Championship on a Ducati fielded by Jeff Nash of Advanced Motor Sports.

Ok guys here is the newbie ?I am considering getting into racing(got license)and would love to run a buell.What bike in the older tubers mods the best or should I go with a xb9.I would like to balance cost against what mods are needed.Who also does race bodywork for buells? Finally I live in WA so any input on class to run would be great.Thanks!

I've seen a few older Buell racebikes running twin stock disks using an adapter to fit an aftermarket Nissin left side caliper. One of you must know where to get this adapter. I know Freespirits sells one but I'd rather not shop overseas.

Weeds, I don't race but I have an interest in it. Airtech makes a lot of bodywork for tubers and Yoyodyne sells bodywork for XB's. With tubers most people run S1's, X1's, or X1/S1 hybrids. The XB's seem to take a lot less effort and $$ to prep. Hal's H-D sells most of the Buell XB race kit parts.

Weeds; I'd suggest going with an XB9R if you're just starting out. You can probably pick one up used at a decent price, and it'll work fine for you as is until you learn the racing ropes.

There are nice aftermarket race parts available from reputable companies, and obviously all current developments are for the new platform.

I think Hal's and Woodcraft carry most of the extras you might want/need.

I'm not sure, but the XB9 might fit into a middleweight twin class of sorts.

Weeds, track day would be the best first investment - of course if you're a veteran racer, you can forget that : )

Otherwise, I'd suggest suspension tweaks.

Buell race belly pans come from the Buell Race dept. You need either a race license or a dealer that has a race program...otherwise they won't know WTF you're talking about!

It seems like most people running carbureted race bikes used CV carburetors. The word I've got is that flatslides can come on abruptly at low throttle openings. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I've been hearing lately of the latest generation SV-650 having serious bottom end failures in competition use. Broken rods and cranks. What a shame.

“There’s no question I know my way around this track, but I’ve had bad luck here in the past,” said Bemisderfer, who failed to finish the 2004 Summit Point Thunderbike race. “David and I had a great battle out there today.”

Suzuki rider David Yaakov, another regular at Summit Point, was third, followed by Williams Harley-Davidson/Buell rider Randy Rega in fourth, Schaeffer’s and Classic Harley-Davidson Buell rider Arthur Diaz in fifth, and Daytona Harley-Davidson/Buell and Richie Morris Racing rider Clint Brotz in sixth position. Kenwood/Sirius Satellite Racing riders Sam Rozynski and Joe Rozynski III finished seventh and ninth respectively, both riding Buell Firebolt motorcycles.

With 26 entries, the Thunderbike field was the largest of the four Formula USA National races of the day. Fourteen of the Thunderbike entries were Buell motorcycles.

After three of eight Formula USA Thunderbike National events, Yaakov leads in series points with 79, followed by Bemisderfer with 64, Estok with 62 and Brotz with 57. The next event on the Formula-USA schedule is the 82nd Annual Loudon Classic, June 16-19 at New Hampshire International Raceway, Loudon, N.H.

The Formula USA National Thunderbike series is a horsepower-to-weight ratio restricted class, open to a variety of production-based motorcycles. Buell-mounted riders compete in the eight-event 2005 Thunderbike series race for a share of the $70,500 contingency fund posted by Buell Motorcycle Company.

Weather conditions on Sunday were variable, and the 12-lap Thunderbike race started on a wet-but-drying track. Suzuki rider Darren Danilowicz led the first couple of laps before Bilansky passed him and started pulling away. Estok made a smart decision by choosing an intermediate rear tire, which helped him weave his way through the pack as the track dried out. He overtook Bilanksy about halfway through the race and turned on the steam, winning the race by more than 13 seconds. Danilowicz finished third, ahead of Suzuki rider David Yaakov, who placed fourth.

Seven of the 14 Thunderbike qualifiers were riding Buell motorcycles. In addition to Estok and Bilansky, the following Buell riders finished in the top ten; Kenwood/Sirius Satellite Racing rider Sam Rozynski in fifth, Blue Springs Harley-Davidson/Buell rider Walt Sipp in sixth, Daytona Harley-Davidson/Richie Morris Racing rider Clint Brotz in eighth and Kenwood/Sirius Satellite Racing rider Joe Rozynski in ninth.

Defending Thunderbike series champion Bryan Bemisderfer, riding for Evo-Twin Racing/Harding Harley-Davidson, qualified fifth but dropped out of the Thunderbike race after four laps due to a mechanical failure.

After five of eight Formula USA Thunderbike National events, Estok and Yaakov each have 123 points to share the series points lead. Bemisderfer is in third place with 91 points. Danilowicz has 87 in fourth place, with Joe Rozynski close behind at 83.

The next event on the Formula USA schedule is August 12-14 at Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Ala.
