Jim,
Well done.
What does this mean?
3rd run I set a new open record at 8 mph. It's called sandbagging and it is legal at Maxton.

I'm going to guess that he was required to run three times, but decided to stay with the previous run speed and basically just completed a completion lap to close out his third run. Probably to save the engine, and to limit what his competition knows about the bike's true potential.

Rule book isn't online at ECTA site.
Found some pictures.

Maxton awards points to a vehicle based upon a rating system, the most important being how fast you beat the existing record.

This year we have decided that getting the ECTA # 1 plate was a worthy endevour and are pursuing it.

We would rather play it straight up but the past has shown if you don't do this you won't be in the top 5 places. After talking to ECTA officials we were assured this was legal and were told to beat them at their own game as eventually there will be no open easy records.

The points go like this:

50 points for starting
50 points for finishing
+2 points for every mph over existing record*
-1 point for every mph under existing record*

Existing record is the one before the meet started.

Points are awarded per plate #, not rider or class.

Only one run per meet counts towards the points race.

Remember, at Maxton you can always run up in classes.

1200 can race in 1350, 1650, 2000 cc classes.

Non streamlined can race in streamlined classes.

Gas bike can run in Blown Gas class.

So we run in two classes per meet. One as fast as we can, one as slow as we can in an open class with no record. The next meet we blow that record away and get maximum points and set a new slow record. Sooner or later all the classes get filled.

Sandbagging,... at it's best, we didn't make the rules we're just playing by them.

I actually got applauded from several areas after screaming through the traps at 8 mph.

At Maxton you can make as many runs as you wish, as many rider changes as you wish too.

$50 for the first class change, $25 for every one after that. Jumping back in a class in the same meet is free.

Court, Aaron, et.al.

Dave Despain was out here today interviewing for one of his upcoming shows. The Springfield Mile was his main show, but he was also gathering local interesting people and event footage. Our effort will be getting some air time. He was already aware of Team Elves and is in general interested in Salt Flat Racing.

He is definitely interested in video of LSR racing if anyone has something for him to look at and maybe use. He is an avid motorcyclist and the sight of him running one of our XR-750's across the parking lot was a riot. Ear to ear smile and he only hit 4k on the tach. 100+ hp in a 300 lb short wheelbase motorcycle makes for fun riding. He was definitely interested in Aaron, he doesn't personally know anyone who has a dyno in their garage.

Hot damn! Have him call me, hell, I'm a huge fan, I even used to watch him on "Motorweek Illustrated 20 years ago. I think the Team Elves story would be an interesting one to the broader audience. And he can come over and dyno bikes anytime he wants. Hell, he ought to cover our pre-Bonneville dyno party, it's shaping up to be a 5 day event this year, with more Buells and the Sportster team too.

We have some videos on the web site, I especially like that one of the pass as seen from the paddock.

Aaron,

Thanks for getting back to me I'll try to download them tonite. He and his crew will be here for a little while in the morning, so maybe I can get a CD rom burned tonite. I will definitely get him the web site. He seemed interested in the cooperative efforts being generated between us, TeamElves and Sportster list versus the Moto Guzzi folk. I guess Harley vs. non-harley will always appeal to his target audience

TeamElves,

It appears likely that D.Despains show will have a crew out at the USFRA meet this year. Lets make it memorable for everyone at home watching on TV.

TeamElves,

I got the videos down from the web site. They really do look good. I am sorry I never looked at them till now. This salt fever seems to be very contagious. Should know more on their plans tomorrow. They are reviewing the footage they took today and will be deciding what to do next. They expect to travel up the Mississippi river to Minneapolis by tomorrow nite so I don't expect them to spend much more time here.

Well, I may know more about the race bike prep, but Mr. Gess is the man for telling our story and relating it to the media, no question, he has a gift for that. Plus he knows more about the RR1000 than I'll ever know, and let's face it, the RR1000 is a big part of what makes this deal special, the bike itself represents a dream fulfilled and a remarkable engineering accomplishment, we just took advantage of it. So yeah, let's hook up Dave with Dave, that's the best place to get the story and it'll get told in a way that'll be interesting to folks.

When he wants to get into the mechanics of what we did to this old bike, I'd be more than happy to help out. Actually, I think that's a pretty good story itself, just because we didn't really do that much by race bike standards, this truly is just a solidly built, tuned-up RR1000. The design was just so good that there was no need to rework every damn thing on the bike.

Aaron, Dave

From the 2 1/2 hours I spent with him today, I thnk they are primarily interested in story lines that generate interest and have good video potential. Our effort out here lacks video, The whole crew brightened up when we started up the XR-750 and ran it around the parking lot. With all his years in motorcycling, Dave Despain had never ridden an XR. The one he was on last fired up and was leading last falls springfield mile, when Danny Stanley threw a chain. This was a very special day in so many ways. I would bet Aarons dyno get together would be very good video and a hell of a story.

Dave,

I expect to have contact info soon. Apparently everything goes back to his producer now and a decision is reached on where the "story line" goes from here. There is always the possibility that this will go nowhere. Dave seems really interested in salt flat racing. We'll see where it goes from here. I thnk he likes the idea that the sportster and Buell communities feel all the pushrod records are ours and we plan on getting them. The lack of factory backing and the grassroots efforts to get these programs under way are also a "story line"?? He was a little surprised that the Moto Guzzi team was factory supported and the harley crowds weren't. Everyone assumes that Harley the Co. can do anything it wants and does.

Brad,

I think they were ending a trip up the mississippi there. As best as I could tell that was just an endpoint up the river. They were collecting video for some sort of people places and scenery along the mother river.

Is there anybody going to Bonneville that would like to share a twin-room at the hotel? I rang Rocket last week, but it looks like my old sparing partner is still wearing a dress, so I'm not going to rely on him being there this year.

Who would have thought the Discovery Channel,i think thats who it was, could do 2 one hour documentaries on Jesse James West Coast Choppers + have it turn out to be one of their most watched shows. Those huge V-twin engines were great to see but the rest of the bikes sucked(imo)+ the sharks eating the dumped in fish + the pit bulls fighting, what the hell?

Surely motorcycle fans would rather see something like the Team Elves story or some AHDRA or how about the Erik Buell story??? Do any of you guys know how to make movies?

Here we go then;
Seriously, now all we need is the $$$

Someone with the know-how must have somehow convinced some big$ types to back them for the production of that "biker lifestyle" theme show. From what ive read Jesse James is now famous + successful from the exposure of that show. That "making of the V-rod"also had to help H-D,i know so because 1 of my friends whos had the same shovel-head for over 25 years saw it + keeps ranting about how much he likes the V-rods. Ya,TV must be a powerful thing when used by smart guys.
