Looks like we have our long-awaited Uly replacement from the "new" Buell company. Revealed at Daytona on Saturday, it appears to be basically an EBR 1190SX with a new tail section and seat, rear bags, lower/more forward foot controls, and a new headlight assembly and windscreen.

Most comments I've seen are complaining that it's not off-road capable like the Uly and many viewers seriously hate the windshield/headlight appearance.

The tires on the rendering they posted months ago on their webpage (see below) implied it would be more off-road focused, but this bike may just be a prototype and not the final product. They'd need to add a couple of inches of height and some protection for the oil cooler for off-pavement capability.

I'm not wild about the windshield or headlight assembly, but I imagine they're both highly functional, and a big improvement over what came on our Ulys. While I'm not in the market for one, I do hope it's successful.

Butter Face is what comes to mind. I agree, it needs some work to make it even fire trail rideable. Kinda disappointed, but am curious what the final product will look like. I too hope it's successful.

For what I'm guessing the price is gonna be, I would most likely take the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R over the Buell.

That math don't add up.

Look at the fork leg. 4" (ish) of travel showing. Look at the distance from fender to LED light bar - 2" (ish).

Hmm.

Is this an Erik Buell creation? Or is it the company who bought the name and leftover parts?

Good catch. I think this is more of a prototype than finished product. The light bar in the illustration is much thinner and integrated into the headlights.

This bike is not an Eric Buell creation. It is the work of the company that bought the name, rights, and parts. The bikes designer is some other guy they brought in from the outside. His name escapes me.

J. Ruiter is the designer per the Buell website.

Erik has nothing to do with this company. Liquid Asset Partners (LAP) bought the remnants of EBR, and acquired the name “Buell” when HD abandoned the copyright on it.

The Uly is no beauty queen either....actually, NO adv bike that I'm aware of is "pretty".

They do not have enough money and they do not expect to sell a lot of those to make it looks pretty. So they use mostly off the shelf pars and a little of custom sheet metal parts to keep it cheap enough so they can sell at least something.

>>>>Is this an Erik Buell creation?

I seriously doubt that Erik, or anyone connected with the "real Buell" had a thing to do with this parts bin creation.

But . . . my opinion is slanted.

Let's see . . . .

This is a Buell-centric website . . . how many here have placed orders or made deposits?

Therein lies the truth.

I recall 1996 when the S1 was rolled out and there was a mad scramble to get them. Some of you recall the introduction of the Ulysses.

Sales tell the truth.

That LED light bar is one pothole from oblivion - and it'll ruin the fender when it goes.

I saw somewhere a $20K pricetag, but that might've been for the Dune Racer. That'll be a big seller! (sarc/off)

The Uly's don't have much more ground clearance - this one's a modern version of the old bike.

Looks-wise, the Uly's a supermodel compared to this thing.

Back to the drawing board, boys!

Later,
EV

From their still un-updated website:

Who?

ST 2 - who?

Why didn’t they name it “1190LLSANP” LooksLikeShitAndNotPractical

Oooh carbon fiber wrap
Oooh EBay LED headlights
Oooh LED bar that might actually be a bumpstop
Oooh generic panniers with STICKERS
Oooh windscreen that’s more vertical than a Jeep’s windshield

It’s front end is uglier the a step mom’s hairy big toe.

It’s not just that it’s ugly, but it has taken a bike with nice lines and run them up to a snagglie toothed wall as far as flow and symmetry are concerned.

At least the Beemer designers have the good sense of following a line, even if their creation is a wonky eyed wonder like my cousin Susan.

…that said, they list it as a tourer, they should drop the pretense that it has any off road aspirations, or figure it out properly.
They Uly isn’t much more then a tail and fairing swap from the rest of the XB lineup so I won’t criticize that, increasing suspension travel an inch of so over stock gets you the XT in the last rendition of the harley owned Buell product.
It’s not pretty enough for a loyal following to give it much more though than general derision. No one’s comments that I have read are critiqing new Buell, but the rendering vs the reality is skewed, and the reality may show that KTM, BMW, Triumph and Ducati all know how to design a bike that isn’t so ugly it won’t sell.

New Buell cannot stake their future on this nasty menace and expect to survive these difficult times. If they bring that front end to market they will not sell more than a handful of bikes so distasteful to look at even a moose’s mother would consider holding it under the water to see if it might just fix it.

I want new American motorcycles to survive! I really dig that LAP respects what Erik designed and built enough to feel it’s a banner worth carrying forward... I just think the front end may be a wall that consumers will even consider trying to climb.

Oooh windscreen that’s more vertical than a Jeep’s windshield

In their defense on this one point, the windshield appears to be fully adjustable (much like the MADSTAD mount people used on Ulys). Why they set it BOLT upright for a display bike is a good question.

I think it would look far less offensive if it was tilted back 15 or 20 degrees.

Agreed. I have a MADSTAD and only put it straight up in rain. It's really noisy there but does blow the rain away better. I'm also in agreement with the headlight mount. Looks industrial and like somebody made it in the garage! Maybe they were trying to copy Harley's idea of an offroad headlight!

I love how if you go to Mr. Ruiters website, there’s not one reference to this bike or working for/with Buell

making everything flat black doesn’t make it industrial or cool looking…

Let’s keep this in mind, Buell is still owned by LAB. LAB buys failed companies and sell off all the assets to make money. What other failed companies will they buy in the next few years and add their parts to two wheels and call it a new model? Do they even have an engineer on staff? The current engine design is something like 14 years old. Yes some small changes have been made at the end of the real Buell and some more during its life with EBR but it’s still a dated design. What fail company will LAB buy and find a failed engine covered in dust in the corner and think this is a great replacement?

To me it looks like they are finding old plans in trash when they purchased EBR and they are trying to glue some resemblance together now.

Well LAP did buy the Motus brand and have not come out with anything with those parts so they must like something about the EBR brand to keep moving forward to sell off all the parts.

They’ve posted a new photo to FB showing it minus the windshield and bags. It shows they did put some work into a new tail section.

That sheet metal headlight cover looks very dangerous. In case you hit somebody it can can cut the person. They even did not round the corners, that thing can stab you effortlessly.

I prefer something like this

The oil cooler location tells me that this is very clearly NOT an ADV machine. At least not yet.

Love how they couldn’t be bothered to change the EBR front sprocket cover

That seat looks AWFUL wide and flat to be comfortable for longe rides

BUT they got rid of the lightbar/bumpstup
