A mechanic swapped in a new Stator kit last week for me. When I went to pick it up, the bike shifted into first just fine, second was difficult and then it seem to skip into fourth and stay there now. The transmission was flawless before this stator replacement work. Also, the clutch engagement seems to be now happening at the very end of the lever release, But it does disengage the transmission enough for me to push the bike when I engage the clutch. Any ideas as to what he may have done or what he could do to fix this issue? This is a 2009 Ulysses, XB12X Thank you so much.

Your mechanic has screwed up re-adjusting the clutch after the install, and has, in all likelihood, also adjusted the primary incorrectly as well.

Both are pretty simple, with a manual, and the even though it shifts like a tractor, if it's adjusted wrong, it will shift badly in any number of ways.

Thank you Glenn, he is a competent mechanic with experience working on Harley’s and I had the printed manual for him that he referred to. I will have him break it down and try again while paying even more attention to the manual. Thanks again for your help.

Cheers!

You're welcome. I've had shifting problems when my primary chain was not adjusted correctly. You'll get it sorted.

how many miles did you get out of the first stator? i swapped in an engine that had about 10k on it and the stator had a large fried spot.

also there are two slightly different stators. i don’t remember the detail exactly, a difference in thickness of a little plastic guard for the wires or something. make sure the one your mech puts back in is either the same as the one that came out or the one with the thinner plastic thingy.

30K miles on it. My mechanic said it smelled burned inside on second try and found damaged parts, so now we are doing the clutch. The basket alone costs over $500 though... ouch!

I think the issue with the stators can be mitigated if you ditch the crappy HD part and installed a "genuine" Shingengen VR before the stator gets fried. I went thru TWO! HD VRs before installing the 3rd party unit and no power problems since. Gotta be careful though, since the "genuine" Shindengen is very frequently counterfeited.
