Wow - HD is really pushing the new bike!

I've seen the TV commercial on several channels, there's at least one billboard in town that has it, and I just saw it on FB Marketplace in one of the listing windows.

Heck, it's not supposed to be available for almost two months!

Anyone hear what the thing'll cost?

I read it will have a starting price of $17,000. It looks heavy and bulky but time will tell.

Article I posted earlier to the Quickboard:

https://www.asphaltandrubber.com/rumors/2021-harle y-davidson-pan-america-1250-price-leak

This thing’s getting a lot of interest and favorable comments over at ADVrider.

So H-D announces a brand new motorcycle platform that is going to be launched with three distinctly different models. Then, H-D scales back to only one of the models and no public plans for the others. How long until H-D announces that the new bike does not support their core business and abandons?

Sort of agree. But HD has put enough R&D into that engine I'm sure we'll see it in a number of 'new models'. Ya know how they put a narrow tire on a Sportster and its a "new Model" , then they put a fat front tire on a Sportster and it's a "New Model", then they paint it AMF colors and it.... you get it.

We'll see that 1250 in a bunch of stuff. Maybe it's the new European Sporty? Because they can't sell the old sporty there anymore.

What's the deal with the engine in terms of appearance? It almost seems as if you're looking at plastic panels that are meant to represent a vtwin instead of y'know, an actual vtwin.

Nothing wrong with the motor. I’d rather have plastic panels than fake cooling fins.

I'd rather just see the motor. My attraction to motorcycles stems from their form being the function.

I call it engineering honesty. If you need to design a plastic trim cover to hide your ugly work... go back to start, do not pass GO, do not collect $200.

Making fake scoops and chrome plastic covers is very different from fully faired motorcycles that are done that way on purpose, V1000, Paso, etc...

I totally agree with that. Something I never liked about the V-Max. You can argue form over function or function over form. I prefer functional forms. We know what it's supposed to do, just make it look good doing it! It's like putting a chrome cover over some ugly coil and wires. Why don't you make a really cool looking coil with bright orange or electric blue wires that stand out. Don't hide what's necessary.

HD is a pretty-paint-and-chrome company (nothing wrong with that) and their chosen spokesman's first action is spraybombing his new promotional toy?
Not cool, hip, or rebel.
Dumb.

Seems light for a fully ready to ride 1250CC ADV bike
.

But HD has played with specs before.

For a company that likes to build bikes just shy of 1/2 ton, that 530lbs is quite the achievement, especially wet. My XT is supposed to be about 475lbs dry. What’s really going to be interesting to see is how well the suspension on the Pan Am Special works. Automatically lowers the bike when you come to a stop, I would think there would be a lot of sensors and programming needed to make that work only when you want it to.

I would guess; Air over oil tied to the ECM with relays. Not rocket science.

^ There was a modified Uly in one of the LAP auctions of EBR stuff that appeared to have something like this in the prototype stage. I wonder if the Pan America’s suspension isn’t derived from something that Buell started ~12 years ago.

Most HD riders can barely ride on the pavement, let alone in the dirt. It's a cool idea that isn't going to work.

Although there are a lot of new riders that started on Harley's and aren't the best riders there are also guys like me that have been riding dirt bikes for over 50 years and now ride a Harley. I like my Uly too. My old riding buddy, who's 88 now and has had to quit riding due to side effects of Diabetes, used to ride a Harley Electra Glide Ultra and lived in the mountains of North Georgia. He was always passing people who couldn't ride as well as him and they weren't riding Harley's. Just saying...

Zane, your comment made me laugh. You see, I recall that some said the BMW GS wouldn't work. But speaking of the Pan America...a Chicago area HD dealer I visited over the weekend told me he sold his entire year's allocation. Pretty impressive considering customers won't take delivery until later this month.

The H-D Pan America demo tour came thru Albuquerque last weekend; I took a ride on a PA Sunday afternoon.

Very, very impressed. Amazing engine. Good brakes, clutch, and tranny. No opportunity to really test suspension (all good pavement on test route), but felt stable thru tight curves even shod with Anakee Wild knobbies.

At 5-8, the ARH (Adaptive Ride Height) allowed me to flatfoot (barely) with "standard" seat on "low" setting.

Reminded me a little of a big sport bike (my '06 Uly?) and I swear riding the PA made me feel twenty years younger (I'm 73).

Hmmm, the extended warranty on my GSA expires in July...
