Makking a separate thread for this. This was Tootal's response to my question about the fan not coming on on my Uly (even though it does work manually).

You should have intake air temp and engine temp sensors. Check both with a cold engine, they should be near the same. If not check the air temp with a separate thermometer and see which one is lying!

I've spent some time messing around with my Buelltooth dongle, but I can't seem to find an option to display the intake air temp.

Engine temp is CLT, right?

Yes it is CLT and you can see it in degrees. You can scroll up or down in Live Data for a whole bunch of parameters: )

I wouldn't know why the intake temp sensor would have anything to do with fan activation?

You're right, it doesn't, though if you could see a difference, it might provide a hint as to one being off somehow.

I just have the free version of ECM SPY and it shows both temps. If one, or both for that matter, are giving false info it can cause a running problem, like cold start issues for running rich once warmed up etc..

After some more experimentation I think it's just a matter of the Uly not really getting hot enough to activate the fan. I went for a ride today (and it was quite cold out, about 3 degrees Celsius), rode for about 15 miles, turned off the bike and checked the temp with the Buelltooth dongle. The CLT showed 145 degrees, not enough to activate the fan on key off.

I adjusted the value to 80 on key off and lo an behold, the fan activated. Guess nothing is wrong?

I now have the key off settings at 150 degrees on and off at 120.

Key on settings are set at 190 on and 175 off.

Does that look alright to you guys?

A bit late to the party here. As Tootal stated, you can keep up with iat, clt on free spy. Twice a year, I will take my cheapie laser thermommeter, and shoot the fuel tank. Then check on spy what the clt and iat are at comparatively. Mine have always been within 6c of each other. I consider that to be the norm now.
The goal of clt is 180c to 220c while in operation. A lot of folks have no idea of how long these bikes take to reach temperature. Datalog this to back me up if you will. I hardly ever fire mine up unless a 2 minute warm up and then an immediate 30 minute ride to get oil and tank warmed and condensate out of motor. (They create an insane amount of water as well). Dont know where everyone lives, but I'm south of houston on gulf coast. Rarely get that cold. I run fan settings of key off , 180c on, 160c off.
Key on , 205c on and 180c off. I would want the motor to start cooling at the upper limits of normal.

That is very, very helpful Sagehawk. Thank you. I'll adjust the settings accordingly (and try to get my hands on a laser temp gun).

As for warming it up properly, I do try to get it at least somewhat up to temperature, often by taking the long way home. (It's difficult because I live in the Netherlands and this country is positively tiny.) Still, riding the Uly for longer certainly isn't a chore or anything.

Those laser temp devices are easy to get now days. Mine came from the Foundry i used to work at. When they closed if you wanted anything besides the computers all we had to do was ask for it and management would write you a gate pass for it and it was yours. They paid big money for mine back in the day. I hope the price of FLIR equipment becomes as cheap one of these days.

Falloutnl: I am glad to be of help. I have all kinds of ideas about these things but not everyone thinks the same as I. Most of this stuff is simply thinking it thru, and what does the machine require and what do I want from it. I've just now gotten back on mine as I'm 5 months out from a hip replacement. Wife had 2 strokes at beginning of year. Havent done much riding at all. Just now got home from a weekend of debauchery as they say, wife and I celebrated 45 years of marriage. What's important is becoming rapidly clearer to me! Take care and pm me anytime if you need!
