Perhaps another test run is in order. New oil change with 50w, new plugs with the correct temperature, a couple of hundred miles and see how it goes. I bought the bike with the intention of rebuilding the top-end because i enjoy doing such things, and it does have 40k on it, but perhaps we should find out exactly what is going on first...

I add 2.5 qts. at the oil change. I would not listen to those 3 qt. threads.

Everything over 2.5 quarts went to your airbox and down the side of the bike. You might try finding a stock dipstick or borrow one until you figure this out.

When you shut the engine off check the oil level immediately. Sometimes they will drain back to sump if you wait too long and give a false reading.

I have found that worming them up in the garage isn't enough to get an accurate reading either.

You have to follow the manual exactly and ride it more than around the block, then park, get off, and by the time you have your gear off, check the dipstick.

And ya, only 2.5 quarts. Thats even if I'm feeling especially Aspergers and drain the ounce or so from the oil cooler.

Holy heck those plugs look terrible. Whats with the orange??

Thats a dirty air box but thats not a 1/2 quart of oil, do a breather re-route with a catch can and you'll know right away if it's coming from there.

2.5 quarts including filter. Second X from the bottom of the stick. Any more will end up in the air box.

And do not use the factory spec on tightening the oil plug.

I found OEM piston/cylinder kits from Newcastle HD for $196/each so I bought a pair - cheap! This way I don't have to mess with tuning a 1250 kit and such. Not entirely clear if the bike needs a new top-end but for that price why not? I bought the bike with the intent to change it and I enjoy working on motorcycles so I'm taking it apart. Going to start a new thread in the XB section for some top-end questions.

"And do not use the factory spec on tightening the oil plug."

Use the spec, but it was mis-printed in some manuals. It is inchlbs not ftlbs.

Should be plenty obvious to anyone halfway familiar with a wrench because its a small o-ringed steel plug into an aluminum hole but history has proven otherwise

Timesert loved that mixup to be sure, LOL.

Sadness for Lil Red indeed. Previous owner stripped the drain hole then replaced the plug with an oddball plug. One thing that drives me nuts. I'll address it sooner or later. "And do not use the factory spec on tightening the oil plug." They couldn't figure out the spec was too high and you expect them to fix it correctly with a Timesert.
