It has been several years since the thread about 3rd party replacement drive belts. At the time the weak consensus was that the 1-1/8 135T harley softtail belts were not strong enough for use on the Uly, given the existence of the idler pulley.

After several years, is there better anecdotal data available?

Broke my first belt at 40,600miles and I want options.

Over 40K? Awesome, I wouldn’t change a thing.

That is good mileage from a belt on a Uly. I got 33,000 or so out of my first two. On my third.

The 06 owners manual said to replace the belt at 25,000.

Way better than chain and sprockets every 10,000 miles.

Can't really compare to chrome couches or Sportys. Different animals.

Mine seem to break around 35k..i usually get around 25k out of chain and 50k out of sprockets...the cost is damn near identical...

@cupcake

But you don't say whether you are using the OEM or the HD softtail belt. That's the whole point of this thread: do the softtail belts stand up as well as the OEM part?

Softail belts are not designed to bend backwards over the tensioner pulley. I can't imagine they'd last as long as an OEM belt for an XB.

Why are you trying to reinvent the wheel? 40k is not unreasonable at all...get another OEM, and go another 40k.

Any XB @ 40K should be given a new belt, if it hasn't yet.

Not reinventing anything. when you have a machine that is no longer made and there are only two retail suppliers in the USA for OEM spare parts (St Paul and NewCastle), a smarter person tends to investigate other options as a money saving or reliable supply chain option. Some of us, who have had depression era values beat into us since childhood, don't share the typical consumer drone attitude.

This thread was never about whether 40k is a reasonable repair interval. It was solely about whether the HD belts are a suitable replacement option.

It's moot not for a while. I needed one quickly so I just ended up buying a replacement from St Paul HD.

Cheers.

This thread was never about whether 40k is a reasonable repair interval. I disagree with this part of the post at 11:45 am on June 08, 2019. And that would be due to a post at 09:50 am on June 08, 2019, "Any XB @ 40K should be given a new belt, if it hasn't yet."

And the last trade show I talked with the Belt Drive Limited guy and he claims they have a belt that will for the Buells. I made sure I talked to him about the belt going around the idler pulley and again he CLAIMS they make a different style belt that is different then the HD carbon / Kevlar belt made to run around the idler. I haven’t tried one yet but maybe if I see him at the next show in August I’ll see if he will sell me one for the 1125r.

Lance, keep us posted on that, I'd be interested in buying one, especially if they end up being less expensive than the OEM ones.

If you're so worried about "supply-chain" issues... Buy 2.
