I bought a 2008 Uly that had what I was told is a 'Special Ops' pipe. Two exhaust 'nozzles'.

Bike ran okay (after my weird throttle problem - see other post), but Lord, it was loud! Especially when backfiring on decel. I've outgrown the 'rowdy' thing.

So, I figured I'd try a "dB Killer" to see if I could reduce the noise, and see how the bike ran. I went for these: https://www.amazon.com/EFORCAR-Exhaust-Motorcycle- Adjustable-Silencer/dp/B017YJ7TMQ/ref=pd_cart_vw_c rc_2_3/130-8370488-6962553?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i= B017YJ7TMQ&pd_rd_r=49c871a6-e9d6-4e82-bad6-741de23 209c3&pd_rd_w=d3MPa&pd_rd_wg=BLTyR&pf_rd_p=7b1a11c b-b9d6-4645-a52e-34c86ca37029&pf_rd_r=PX9YF14MEG74 FTMZW0AX&psc=1&refRID=PX9YF14MEG74FTMZW0AX.

Well, they work great! I may have lost some grunt in the mid to high rpm range, but the (relatively) peaceful ride more than makes up for it. And, the backfiring seems reduced, and is much quieter.

The inserts -almost- fit. I needed to take a rotary sander to the nozzles and clean them up, and used a bench grinder to reduce the diameter of the inserts right at the 90, where they seemed to be a bit larger.

I lubed them with anti-seize, and tapped them in. I used the set screws, but only because they were there. I took out the plugs.

Great result for less than $10! And, they are removable!

Funny, but the engine seems a lot noisier now...

Not sure how SOpís modified the muffler, but probably gutted and re-ported to open up the flow. I like that insert you bought, basically puts a baffle back in. You could probably tweak your fuel map to get the performance back. Is that a stock ECU?

One thing a lot of folks overlooked in searching for more noise over stock, was that the pipe ends under the rider, not out the back. Usually that noise would drone on and on when doing long trips.

Then there was the tuning to match the pipe. It was damn hard to beat the stock valves muffler.

I've always wanted a way to make my Uly quieter at times. Especially going through places like Yellowstone. The bike came with the EBR ECM and an opened up muffler. (Not sure, but maybe a Drummer)

I wonder if it would even be feasible without changing the tune each time you put the inserts in??

Agree, the standard muffler works brilliantly but in our (UK) climate it will need repainting at least annually and there is no replacement available for the valve motor when it inevitably craps out.

I remember the Special OPS from Odie still used the valve. One person described it as, "deep rumble when cruising and harsh CRACK under load with the exhaust valve open". My suggestion if you want it quiet, would be to find the stock pipe and put it on. If you decide that is what you like, then sell the Special OPS pipe and recover your money. I run a car muffler because I wanted a project and I think the HAWK pipe the PO put on $əX. Then I sold the HAWK because there are people that like noise.

actually, there is a replacement for the valve motor. there is a thread, maybe in the Knowledge Vault. I forget the name of the manufacturer, but it was make to operate a similar type of valve i think on the air intake system of Ford F150. You may need to make up a bracket to hold the cable.

I am re-thinking my plans to install an aftermarket muffler since some complaints about loud bikes from my Japanese and BM"W mounted riding buddies today the bike runs great with the stock muffler set up right. There is great temptation to tinker but may not be an overall gain.

I thought it was used on the ford for the heat and A/C system to change where the air goes. But not epa certified for our use.

Will have a look for that. Mine failed last year. My Remus muffler also cracked at the chin fairing mount at about the same time.
I'm running a lovely APH muffler now which is beautifully made and gives great performance but would like to have a quiet option available for the future.

Griffmeister, I do not know what state the ECU is in, but it is a replacement unit with the same P/N.
The bike runs better with the baffles, and I'm guessing the bike has a 'stock' tune.
I'm going to see if the local HD service department has the OEM tunes available. I might have the original tune re-flashed.

Here's a photo of the insert. I'll trim the set screws this weekend.

I ran a Drummer on my Uly for a while.

Back to stock now.

The drone was just...annoying. Quality product, don't get me wrong, but on longer (as in, days-of-riding) trips it would make me physically tired.

I love the factory race exhaust (header and muffler) on my S1W...but on that hooligan, a "long" ride is anything more than an hour. And, it's more crackle than drone...hard to explain, but somehow not nearly as annoying. At least to me. Maybe because that bike doesn't "cruise" - I use it to tear up back roads, lots of throttle variation and gear changes. It rarely if ever sees an interstate highway slog.

I also - for the same reason as the Uly - went from Supertrapp, to race, to stock, on my S2. Long rides...it's just nice to have the peace and quiet. If I ever get off my ass and get the Defender finished...it'll be stock as well.

I'll trim the set screws this weekend.

You can buy real set screws and not have to trim them.
