I hate them so much. I’m in the process of tracking down one on my 08 XT. About a week ago, I went to leave for work, rolled the bike out of the garage, fired it up, suited up, and while I was putting on my helmet, the bike stalled. Ok that is odd, I’ll just fire it back up. Nope. Clicking the starter causes nothing to happen, half the lights on the dash are lit, toggling the run switch doesn’t do anything, Turning the key off, the dash and headlight was still on but very dim.

Now I’m mad as I need to leave for work, I don’t have time for this crap. Quickly pop off the seat, do the relay dance, pull and quickly inspect fuses, put it back together, same thing. I need to go, so I just quickly detach the battery, push it inside and take the truck.

Today I finally have time to play with it, I take the front plastic off, start poking around as I assume it is related to the ignition switch or a ground in that area. I turn the key on, lights and such come on like normal, I begin poking and prodding, moving bars, wiggling wires, and trying to cause it to do this crap again. Nothing happens. Frustrated, I roll the bike outside, start it, and continue trying to make it die. Again nothing. I put the seat back on and take it for a spin around the block, nothing.

Now here I am with a bike that won’t break when I want it to, but you can bet your ass that on Monday it won’t want to voyage to my work.

Sounds just like mine Froggy! It's in storage now but soon to return now that the concrete is dry. I'll let you know what I find if you let me know what you find!

Wow, I could have written that too. My only positive is that I have an 06 of my sons around so when the 07 does it I quickly just take the other bike. One of them randomly will do the same thing while out on a ride and I also do the "relay dance" and within a few minutes I'm good to go again. Will certainly dive into the harness someday :-)

One thing I have found on the 06 is that the Neutral sensor? stopped working and I also had to bypass the clutch switch. So I don't think the 06 has had a similar problem of the no starter for a while. Just always have to be sure I really am in neutral :-)

ettenuly answered this for me in my posting stumbling and falling down.
Mine was the red wires with the "cold solder" joint in the front wire loom, near the ground joint that always goes bad as well. which i re-did and also the 3rd mult-bundle, for the turn signal gremlin gone

Yeah they definitely went "low bid" on the wiring harnesses after 2004.
My friend's 2004 XB12 never gave him any spooky issues and any X1 didn't either.

They had that broken wire fixed in the steering neck by late 07.

Sounded to me like you fixed it. Why did you detach the battery?

That is a common symptom of a loose connection on a battery terminal. Maybe it wasnt hooked up well and now it is???

If the headlight and dash were "on but very dim", with the key off - maybe bad contacts in the key switch (burnt and stuck together)?

It is not fixed, I had it happen again, possibly steering neck related as it was fine until I turned the bars all the way to the left and it switched back to the failure, so the battery remains disconnected so it doesn't drain until I can figure it out.

Very well could be, and I hope it is that rather than an issue with the main harness as I can easily replace the ignition switch.

Arry, that was a good catch. i did not not read initial post well enough to catch the lights stayed on with the key off.

also i was unaware that the wiring problems had been resolve before 08.

my bad

i'm not very good at taking advise, i don't know why i am offering it: i'm even worse at that

The wiring problems weren’t all resolved. Mine’s an 08 and I’ve had broken wires at the steering head twice now. Granted they were the typical ground breaks and I have since did the single larger wire between the steering head and inside of the fly screen.

Seems to me I remember someone here a while back having a key switch problem. I think they had corrosion inside the switch from condensation. Could try unplugging the switch and jumping the terminals just to test.

The resolution in the steering neck for mid 07 as I recall it, removed the two triple splicers and went to a new plastic retainer on the steering neck. It fixed the splicer failure.

Add ten years and something is bound to fail.

Froggy, if you are bringing that thing to BITA 8 in the pick up, come by spend the night we can fix some wires and ride in with your favorite starter fixer guy who might also be here to ride down.

Vern that is tempting. However I doubt I am going to BITA as I've burned through most of my vacation time and was planning on attending WVBR instead.
