I noticed the other morning that I only had a parking light up front (everything else works) and I have been driving myself crazy(er).
To cut to the chase, the headlight fuse red wire runs off of the start relay so the relay turned out to be the culprit.
Off to pick up a new relay to plug back into the AUX slot.

I'll say it again, these bikes have the weirdest problems.

Correction, the problem was even stupider than the relay: over time the electrical connectors lost their grip on the headlight fuse. Vibration would move the fuse around, it would lose contact with the spade connectors and there go the lights.
