I poke around here and YouTube to find a step by step guide on how to use these tuning devices, with no luck. The closes I found was the TPS reset. I'm 49 and I'm not too skilled with the tech world. I have built engines and I'm familiar with fuel injection, so I know what I want to see but I have know idea how to download this tuning software or whatever it's called and then connect it to my bike. Once I learn how to to that and change what I want to change, I'll be good I think??? I'm hoping someone has a detailed video or log on how to do this? You younger guys can do it in your sleep, to us older guys, it's like reading Chinese manuals.

Man, it's statements like this that have me SMH but I'm sure it's fairly easy if you understand it. What is a FTDI???

shorty,

Don't know if this is helpful still, or too late, but you need to download the FTDI driver here:

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

You should disconnect any internet connection and click "No, not this time" each time windows prompts you to allow it to find the driver on its own. Then force it to search within the unzipped folder you downloaded. You will install drivers for two devices, one after the other.

FTDI makes the serial to USB chip that the ECM interface cables use. Good news is, these days the driver is built into Windows so you no longer need to download an manually install it, just plug the cable in and go.

You're not alone Hugie. I'm in the same boat... I did however get a Buelltooth gizmo and was able to interrogate my ECU. So far I managed to change the AFR setting and see what difference it made. Better than that I changed the setting for the muffler valve so it opens when its supposed to instead of staying closed until WOT. Why that is not the default setting I'll never understand

I'm trying Froggy to understand this and let me see if I got it. If I buy an interface cable. Plug it into my bike and PC. The Windows program in my PC should bring everything up automatically ?
Giarcg, I was gonna get that Buelltooth but it only works on android phones. Everything I have is Apple. Unless they have something to adapt it to apple products.

Every piece of hardware in your computer has what is called a driver, it is a small set of instructions for Windows so it knows what the hardware is and what to do with it. When you plug in a new device, like a mouse or something, you get that da-ding sound and the "searching for drivers" message in the corner, then Windows usually will look online and figure it all out for you.

In some cases, Windows can't figure out what driver it needs, so you would then usually install it from a download or a CD. The driver is built into Windows 7 and newer, but Windows XP (if you are still using it) will require you to manually install the driver.

I hope you have something with Windows, as there is no native Mac solution. If you have Bootcamp setup you can boot into Windows and use that.

Also, the free ECMspy is not compatible with your 09, you will need to either get the paid version, or use TunerPro (free but a real pain in the ass to setup and use)

Thank you Froggy for that detailed explanation that I actually understood very well! Now I have a good idea what to do.
Question; when you say paid version... Is that a one time fee or is it like HP Tuners where every time you tune something, you have to keep paying for more (bits, bites, whatever they call it)?

That fee everyone speaks of is a donation to the papworth hospital on behalf of the authors of ecmspy. There was a member of there group that got sick and finally passed but papworth was the primary facility for her care. So , no matter what folks think of having to pay for ecmspy, this is gunter's and other authors way of licensing your software and supporting a good cause.
That being said,, when you download the non working paid for ecmspy, then do the process of your donation, gunter is notified that is complete. Then he will download to your account a file to activate your spy. You will be fully functional at that point. Now, when you download the non working version, do it on the computer or whatever that program will be on. The registration will include a key that will only work on that device only. This keeps you from sharing the whole program with your friends. Now on ecmspy.com there is a list of ecms that have a designation. My 07 12 x ecm is a bueib designation. The license for that was 72.50 usd. I can work with 2005 thru 2007 ecms of that designation. Other designation will cost 72.50 apiece. Just depends on the different buells you or your friends own. I've helped 2 other fellas out with the spy and it's worked fine. File management becomes utmost paramount at that point to keep up with what is yours or your buds.
Hope this has helped a bit as its been a journey for me. Read everything twice at least on ecmspy.com to get all info you can.

Why thanks , Tootal! Just trying to help as I have been helped. There are mechanical types and electrical types . Each of us has some thing to offer freely if only we would.
Btw, Tootal, new job is working out great! No more driving 500, 600 miles a week. Am home with time to do stuff in the evening even!

The fee for ECMspy is once per ECM, so if you have two bikes you would need to pay twice, but you can do whatever you want unlimited on those after that. If you swap in a Race ECM you would need to pay again, so keep that in mind if you plan on getting one.

HP Tuners is similar how it works, you have to buy a credit to unlock each vehicle you use it on, but once unlocked you can do whatever you want.

Has anyone had success using ECM Spy with the IDS ECM?

I really would like to get some data beyond just error codes for troubleshooting. Just got through a week of tracking down a stalling and hesitation issue and felt like I was working blindfolded.

I don't own any android devices so I'd like to hear from someone who's done it before I go to the trouble of getting an android just for tuning the bike.

Thanks!

Jason

Your welcome Hugie03flhr. Sometime the frustration outweighs the benefits. Version 2 of spy is what I use mostly and after a while, since I don't travel much, it's as good as it is gonna get. Next step at next motor roll, I'll pull header and get a 02 bung welded in front header pipe and might consider wide band sensors to continue learning curve to tune front and rear together. Unless you buy a pipe or a whole system, it's hard to find trusty maps for still stock setups. Then it still needs tweaking
I've got my rear cylinder pretty much dialed in with narrow band sensor but I'm not so sure what to do with the front until I get a sensor in that header. Any ideas are welcome from the masses out there. Some say to copy , paste rear to front and add 2 over that across entire map. Well see as time goes.

Sagehawk, I didn't realize our ECM was capable to handle a wideband O2, never mind front and rear O2 sensors. That's pretty cool. I was just gonna pull the trigger on an IDS ECM . They have one for stocke exhaust and KN air filter. My thinking was to have an extra ECM tucked under the seat just in case it ever fails out on a trip.

its not so much the ecm. when tuning like that ecmspy or tuner pro is the software that takes the info and interprets what the sensor voltage is. that conversion of voltage to exhaust gas oxygen lets you know what your mixture is. anywhere from 12 to say 17. the paid verson of megalog viewer will support a panel of other settings beside 14.7 stoichmetric. so you can tune the whole map to what you want, not just the closed loop area. narrowband sensors read 0-1 volts and widebands read 1-5 volts. in the end, once whole map is what you want, then you wind up back to narrowband with your ecm for normal operation. some folks tune maps without running o2 sensor later. but then the adjustibility of the system is no longer there. thats ok for the person that stays in a geographic area and doesnt worry about altitude or changing weather conditions. thats why the afv is a dynamic thing. it will slightly change as you ride under different conditions.
in the end, a bought ecm from ids is the best way to go for the average rider. all this other stuff can get a person into trouble and can kill the bike. I play with this stuff as they say old people need to exercise their brains. I like learning new stuff and being able to help others if i can. most folks just dont have the patience. Sad but the world has changed.

I have been changing target AFRs without issue in the free Megalog Viewer. On 03-07 bikes, there is also a workaround to change the target AFRs with ECM Spy format save files (not with the program itself, but with notepad).

Phelan, thanks for correction. There is still a lot I am learning bout programs. When changing afr in mlv , are you tuning with a wide band or narrowband? Version 1 spy as well?
