With the extremely limited options out there for aftermarket exhausts to replace the Buell XB underslung muffler, has anyone found, made, or had made, a more traditional upswept system? Or does the design of the XB frame prohibit that as an option. With the variety and seeming effectiveness of twin or two into one Supertrapp systems for Sportsters, I'm a bit surprised that I've never seen such a system adapted to the Buell XB. What might be the reason for this? | ||

I haven't seen anything outside a handful of customs that do anything like you describe. Given the small market share and the R&D needed to overcome the packaging issues I haven't sever seen anything production that doesn't use the underslung design.    | ||

As Teeps mentioned, "It ain't broke." The stock muffler works very well in terms of performance and noise reduction. The big downsides are it tends to corrode in some environments and it's heavy. Like many others, I have an aftermarket (EBR) race ECU and then I went with a modified stock muffler, Spec-Ops, it's much lighter, uses stock mounts so it doesn't interfere with the stellar function of the Ulysses, and for my wife, it sounds pretty nice too. So far I have 40K on this pipe on two different Uly's. You couldn't give me that ducati styled monstrosity posted above. Needless complexity. | ||

Because replacing the original exhaust with something that has a more traditional upswept design would ruin the entire mass centralization thing that makes a Buell great. | ||

Are you just talking about a LOOONG set of headers? Or why is the muffler between the tires? Relocating/flattening the muffler would gain ground clearance... Maybe good for a uly? | ||

On my XB9R (boy, that was a while back; is that the correct model designation?) I fitted a car muffler adapted by Latus Motors to replace the stocker. Fit in there like it was made for it. Even had two chrome tips. It was a little lighter and a fair bit louder. When I sold the bike I sold the muffler to a guy in Belgium. --Doc | ||

My 06 is currently being restored. I looked at an old photo and noticed it says "Micron" for the exhaust system. I assume this is stock? See attached photo (it also shows a previous owners orange hand paint effort):  | ||

Hangetsu, You've probably seen this on Portland Craig's List, but if you haven't, it a Free Spirits front exit exhaust, with headers. Looks pretty serious, but pretty spendy. Also, you'd have to reprogram your ECM, or get a ECM that's set up for this system. | ||

Neither yet. The front curved piece is from a broken Jardine off fleabay for $37.72 shipped with chin fairing brackets. The pipe is an unmodified Magnaflow 11148. Last I heard Dean Adams Is still making a very nice complete system using the 11148. I know mine wont look as nice as the work he does, but I'm a DIY type. Keep in mind, the stock (or Buell Performance) muffler is not only a muffler, but it is your jack point...and it makes one hell of a good skidplate. NO aftermarket unit is going to be strong enough to support the bike - jack on an aftermarket pipe and you'll pancake it. +1 on mass centralization. As an example - put a full 2L soda bottle in each hand. Extend your arms fully. Twist at the waist, full left to full right, a few times, quickly. That's what high-up exhausts feel like to a motorcycle chassis (and by extension, to the rider of said machine). Now, tuck both bottles to your chest and do the same rotations. Mass centralized. Feel the difference? So does the motorcycle. Same weight, just in the "right" location now. +1,000 on "if it ain't broke..." | ||

Mine is getting the 11148 because a previous owner thought Hawk was the way to go. Hawk is what it is. Not my cuppa? I liked the stock pipes. | ||

I agree with "if it ain't broke, don't fix it.", and mine ain't broke - yet. I was only inquiring because it will be broke someday, and with aftermarket options for the underslung system dwindling (there have never been aftermarket options that work as a jack-point), I was just probing for other options. I was thinking of an upswept "street-trackerish" that would likely look, work, and sound freak'n awesome. Supertrapp silencers are not only light, they are tunable, and a tried and proven choice for air-cooled twins. Anyway, I guess my question was answered. Cheers! | ||

i have an edelbrock 5504 RPM muffler (discontinued) that I had a buddy weld up to copy the latus can and it works very well as a jacking platform. nice, wide flat bottom too  but I can see where an aftermarket supplier would not endorse their muffler as a jacking point, cuz then you could hold them to it if you knock your bike over | ||

Got to my welder. I can't get any spare time. I'm still moving into new to me house. Doing a lot of work for a ready to move into house. Little things like pulling cabinets, removing bulk head, yanking out island, spackling, and painting. Moving self from 300 miles away, wife from across town, and mom-n-law and new hubby from 2 houses into a new one. | ||

I found the rear clamps unused at a material rehab place. Both of them and a DVD of Nacho Libre plus tax was $2.13 . I was supposed to be looking for a ceiling fan. | ||

Looks really good ,but turn those clamps around and tighten them from the right side With a ratchet extension piece it's accessible through the belt tensioner wheel Looks cleaner and no sharp things stick out. | ||

I'm wondering how it runs with that muffler. Purpose-build systems have varying, and not always positive, effects on power delivery. I read a thread a few years ago about someone who modified a Magnaflow muffler to fit his Uly. It looked great, but he was very unhappy about the resulting power delivery. He later changed to a purpose built pipe (I forget which one) and it ran great. |
