My newly purchased 2010 XB12X just stopped running. I coasted to the side of the road. I could not restart the Buell after numerous attempts. She would turn over, but no ignition. After about an hour, I did start the thing, but after it idled for about 5 seconds, it stopped. The engine light and the oil light remain on after failed attempts. It's a used bike, about a month old. The oil looked fresh, but was a bit low before I started by journey, so I topped it off according to the method described in the manual. This left me stranded on the side of the road for 6 hours. I was on my way to Bonneville to do my volunteer work as a radio announcer for the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials. Eventually I was rescued by my son and my foreman, but was really disappointed as I was looking forward to the ride. Any suggestions? | ||

Take the gas cap off and see if it'll crank. It could be a plugged vent hose. Outside of that, check fuses and see if the electrical connectors on the ECM show signs of stress. The seat can press down on the connectors breaking the internal solder joints. | ||

On my `06, in the plug for getting codes, you could short 2 out and get the code its throwing. I`m not sure if this holds true for `10s. Check your manual, its a place to start. | ||

There is a 4 pin plug, on the left side. You can find it through the hole just below where the seat meets the frame. It has a cap on it you have to pull off to see the pins. I don`t have a manual handy now, but it should show you in it. | ||

When you pull the fuel cap, check for fuel. | ||

Ourdee, I topped off 80 miles prior to the incident, but I did check and there is plenty of gas in the tank. Thanks for contributing. Any other suggestions are welcome. | ||

Jon when you cycle the key switch, are you getting needle sweeps? can you hear the fuel pump priming? | ||

Sorry to hear that Jon! That bike was on my short list. My 08, when owned by Mike, had something really odd and unlikely to recur, but that is worth checking, as the symptoms were EXACTLY what yours were. His fuse for the fuel pump cracked. It didn't burn out, it *cracked* like with metal fatigue. He showed it to me, and there it was, plain as day, a perfect little crack. A new fuse, and it was as good as new and ran perfectly. Somebody here helped him track that down, and deserves a gold star for finding it. Hootowl, was that you? Anyway, replace (or really carefully inspect) the fuel pump fuse and see if everything gets better. | ||

Put the kill switch down(off) cycle the key switch, watch the needles, after they zero put kill switch to ON and you should hear the pump prime. After confirming the pump runs, you can repeat the kill switch deal a few times and try to start the bike | ||

Twisteduly, Yeah, now I remember the rather loud fuel pump priming thing. Was really pronounced in my X1, but I've been riding an S2 for so long after getting rid of the X1, that I forgot about that. Now that you mention it, the sound is really weak, like a faint cranking, not at all like the howl/whine of the X1 fuel pump. As far as the trouble code thing goes, can I use any wire I have to short the 4 pin plug? Can I get a shock doing this? | ||

You can even use a jack knife to jumper the two pins. | ||

Since bottom cover of the pump is easy to access (bottom end of the left side frame), use a long screwdriver and place the blade against the pump cover and the handle tight against your ear. Switch on, and you should very clearly hear an electric motor run for a few seconds. (Message edited by Mark_weiss on September 05, 2016) | ||

I'm taking the Uly to JT& S performance tomorrow. As I've been reading this thread, i have also noticed the volume of threads about problems. Not very confidence inspiring. This XB was supposed to be a better bike. It isn't. Lots of problems with my Buells and no more patience. added in an edit on 9/8/16 - I wanted to leave my stupid comment up as a reminder of what a crappy post can look like. But I decided to delete my comment instead as it made me feel like such an ass every time I looked at it. So the exciting truck drivin' swearin' post is gone, and my apology in my next post remains. Those problems always seem magnified because the many owners that haven't had issues tend to report in a lot less often (as they don't have problems that need solving). | ||

Jon- I'm sorry for your issues and I'm sure it's a royal PITA with a "new" bike, especially when it complicates a trip to Bonneville. OTOH it's a 7 year old used motorcycle and you really don't know how well the PO took care of it. Get it sorted, ride it a few months, and then see what you think about it. There's a reason some of us are willing to work through problems, even monumental ones, to keep these bikes. | ||

You should see the list of stuff that's gone wrong with my Kawasaki's.  (There are 4 of those things in my garage right now, and only 1 of them is running.) Getting stranded is a real bond breaker between rider and bike. If you want to stick with it, I'm sure your Uly can be made reasonably reliable. If not, you should have little trouble selling it for about what you paid for it and there are a lot of nice bikes out there. | ||

OK, first I owe Buell and everybody on this board and Erik himself an apology. Buells are not shit. I had no business saying that. And this is why I should not post after a 2 martini (Hendricks, up with olive) dinner. Maytag blue cheese salad, French onion soup, and two of the aforementioned Martinis. My post is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever posted on this board. Disappointment aside, I rode my 1995 Buell S2 to work today. My son is taking my bike to JT&S Performance today. Those guys are the best, hands down. Just talking to Terry made me feel better. And yes, it's a used bike. Nuff said. Peace out. | ||
