I've seen this posted many times but I have a symptom I have not seen anyone else mention. I have an 08 XB12XT and like most everyone else the problem only starts when the bike reaches full operating temperature. But here is where I mix things up a bit, this only happens when I have the bike in gear and the clutch in. If I put it in neutral the idle goes back to normal. A little background: I got the bike 2 years ago and the idle would surge once in a blue moon, this spring I added LED headlights, and a Denali Soundbomb air horn. When I put the bike back together I noticed the high idle now occurred every time I stopped. So I began to look for answers. The first thing I noticed was the location I put the horn relay. I mounted it to the battery box right under the ECM wires. The previous owner had cut some of the plastic from the seat and there appeared to be enough room between the wires and the relay but I know these ecms are sensitive so I relocated it anyway. This didn't seem to help. Since this problem only began after adding the headlights horn I though maybe a ground issue. I added an extra ground from the battery to the big ground strap on the upper motor mount. Well she does seem to start stronger but the high idle is still there. Now I did add a ground for the horn ground at the neck underneath the headlight assembly but I haven't had a chance to check that out and clean it yet because my fan shit the bed last week and I needed to swap that out. while I had the battery box out I filed and cleaned the metal on the main ground going from the battery to the seat. I'm not sure where to go next and any help would be appreciated. | ||

SON OF A.... Well I was going to argue the point a bit but before I did I went out to give a quick look. Guess what? The bike will not start in gear with the clutch pulled in. I guess I pretty much always start from neutral and hadn't noticed this. Thanks! | ||

Good deal. They are cheap and easy to replace. Some have had luck opening them, cleaning them, and putting everything back together. | ||

I have this exact issue as well. I replaced the clutch switch to no avail. My current theory is that the clutch switch wiring is worn somewhere and acting as though the switch is bad(my 09x has 64k miles). Will get around to diving into it someday, but it hasn't bothered me enough to look....yet. | ||

Unfortunately for me, I have the same thing as Portero going on. Just to confirm this was the cause of my high idle I pulled the connector off and ran a jumper between the two terminals. The bike still won't start in gear. Because I wasn't sure if it was a normally open or normally closed switch I tried it without the jumper still no luck. |
