Ok This should be easy but it's kicking my a$$. My 08 XT has a plastic cover that goes over the top shock mount and I need to remove it. It seems to move freely until I try to pull it out and I don't want to break it. I have the service manual but I can find no reference to it or pictures of it. Even the section on removing the shock doesn't have a pic and doesn't mention it in the steps. I've Googled, I've searched, I've Google searched, NOTHING. Please help. | ||

That would be part of the heat comfort kit that was an accessory offered to help control heat coming out from under seat onto rider. I'm not running one myself. All who have them talk highly until maintenance time and removing , installing the thing. Someone will chime in that has one and how they remove, install the thing. Best wishes and there's a reason why I'm not running one! | ||

Thanks Sagehawk, that still helps tremendously. That kit was OEM on the 08 XT if I'm not mistaken, but that explains why it wasn't in the manual! Now that I know what I'm looking for it should be easier to figure it out. If anyone else has any advice I'd still appreciate it though. | ||

If it was stock on your model, it ought to be mentioned. Maybe the parts manual has it listed? | ||

I found a PDF of the instructions for the comfort kit, it actually talks about removal. It does look like a P in the A however with a lot of crap having to be removed. I won't get to work on it until Monday so if anyone has any tips or tricks before I start I'd still appreciate it. | ||

I have a 96 road king and it's like, once you know what has to come off to work on something it's like , well crap, that has to come off and that has to come off. You just light a smoke , mix a drink, and take off crap for the first 4 hours and then all well. The next day you actually start working on the job at hand. When done, you spend the next day putting all the extras back on. It is what it is. Then you fire it up thinking your done. Best wishes and let us know how you are doing! | ||

That kit was not OEM on the 08's which is why it's not in the manual. I put the comfort kit on my 08 many years ago and I remember that cover being quite difficult to get in place, best done on a hot day so the plastic is more flexible. In fact, if I remember correctly, there are two points to keep in mind. One is the flexing already mentioned, no matter what you take off you're still going to have to weasel that sucker into (or out of) place. Two is that I think you also have to remove the ECU. If yours is in the original location then you have to deal with that little caged nut under the spacer block that likes to fall out when you remove/install the block. Maybe you could use a hair dryer to warm up the plastic and pry it out once you have access. | ||

With regard to the plastic trunk pan removal/install, etc, heat is your friend. Safest source, direct sunlight. A heat gun can be used with caution... | ||

Thanks Court, my messages started going to spam for some reason so I didn't see the request. Again Thanks for the info. I'm still waiting on my replacement fan before I start pulling it apart. (Which is the whole reason I'm doing this.) I got screwed by some guy in Brooklyn NY. He took over week to mail it to me and now I won't have it till Saturday. I am SUPER pissed. | ||

I pulled the fan this past weekend, removing the comfort kit was really not that bad the worst part is trying to remove the trunk pan. I did take everyone's advice and kept the bike in the sun. But it was still a little scary because it did need a good bit of force and i like to break things. | ||

I unbolt the brake reservoir, remove the upper sub-frame bolts, loosen the lower bolts. swing the sub-frame down about an inch and wiggle it out through the top. 20 minutes. Want less work? Cut it in half and each side comes right out. A piece of tape keeps the air out of the cut line. Also, notice the orange spacer below the ECM protective block? The seat never touched the ECM connector again. 5 minute job.......  |
