I am considering mocking up an extra fuel tank for long trips and was wondering if anyone here had an opinion on how to plum it into the factory fuel system.

Thanks!
Claude

I would be interested in this plan also. Currently I am carrying extra fuel in a tool tube under one of bags.

There's a drain plug on the fuel pump flange. I think that's what everyone who's added an aux tank has used.

Probably going to have to have a fuel pump in the auxiliary tank and a fuel return line, filters. Might be able to get around that if you can put the switch and line before the OEM pump inlet.
There may be a momentary drop in fuel pressure during the switch so not sure how the ecu would react to that. To do it right would be a huge endeavor. It would probably be better to just get a Tour tank or something.

You want messed up? I used to ride to and from work on the Uly with the fuel light on. Today as I left my neighborhood on the way to work the fuel light on the SCG came on. I thought Ok I'll get gas after work. The reserve on the Scg is 14.1 miles. It was another 14.2 miles to work after the light came on. I pushed it into the parking lot and to the motorcycle parking. At lunch a 5 gallon can of premium showed up beside my bike.

It was a pretty easy mod to do.
I plumbed the tourtank into the drain plug like Hugh said.
I had a in line filter with a fuel shut off under my left leg.
When the low fuel light came on I would ride another 10 to 20 miles and turn the fuel shut off on.
The fuel light would go off not to long after that.
Gravity did all the work.
Just make sure you shut the valve before refilling the auxiliary tank

What is the advantage of one size of plumbing over another? The 1/4" compared to the 5/16". What is the recommendation for use on the XB?

Mark,
Are you still running the auxiliary tank on your bike? What size is it? Can you give me specific info on the part you installed into the XB frame/tank?

Claude,
Have you made any progress on the fuel cell?

Thanks, R.D.

I sold the ULY a few years back but it was the tourtank 4 gallon tank.

I pulled the drain plug out of the fuel pump and replaced it with a threaded outlet fitting.
This is where I ran into a problem.
The drain plug and threaded outlet had different threads.
I used a die and cut new threads onto the outlet fitting... added some teflon tape and had no leaks.
I ran the hose from the tank down the left side of the rear seat frame and placed the fuel shut off for the tank where I could reach it while riding. I would ride about 20 miles after the fuel light went on and then I would turn the fuel valve on the tourtank.

Just make sure you shut if back off before your next fill up.

Only thing holding me back at this point. I need to find a plug and play solution. May have to get a used Buell fuel plug to get measurements off of. Did you have to remove the swing arm to get access to the plug?

My Scg only has a 3.8 gal. fuel capacity. I will probably have to put a partial charge into the main tank and finish it the second time the fuel light comes on. Practice will tell me how long to leave the valve open.

If you unbolt the bottom of the rear shock you can jack the bike up to get the fuel pump out without removing the swing arm. Access to the drain bolt is easy this way.

I know this is an older thread, but was wondering if anyone has came up with a plug and play solution? for replacing the drain plug with a fitting so I can easily run an aux tank

Thanks!
