I have the clicking under hard braking.
Is the 2006 steering head bearings adjustable? The manual I have looked at online says no.
Steering head bearing resistance is not adjustable. "

"Replace bearings that do not meet resistance specifica- tions."

Time to replace them. Of you prefer the tapered roller bearings to the OEM ball bearings, you can get a conversion kit from All Balls Racing. I and a few others are rocking the conversion kit.

So, my question is are they adjustable?

Yes and no. If they just started to click you might be able to get a few more miles by just tightening them.

Loosen the clamp screw for the large chrome allen head cap screw under the handlebars. Then loosen the cap screw. Loosen the lower fork clamps on the triple trees. Torque the cap screw to factory specs. Then tighten all the clamp screws.

This might be all you need. If you do that and it doesn't improve then you need new bearings. They are not regular ball bearings but angular contact bearings and must be installed back to back or in opposite directions because they only take thrust in one direction.

I have adjusted mine twice on my '06. The first time was at about 10,000 miles. It was doing the clicking under braking. I could actually feel the play in them. All was good for the next 50,000.

At over 60,000 the bars began to swing too easily to the left and right. Although it did not begin to click or otherwise feel loose like at 10,000. I torqued them to spec as I did the first time and it now feels like new again. Nearly 63,000 on the original bearings.

Yes, they are totally adjustable and the proper method and specs are in the service manual. Most important, do not over torque them.

Thanks for the replies. I have just read that the front disc has a locating mark on the rotor that has to be aligned with the valve stem and the noise started when I had taken the rotor off and inspected the springs etc. It looks like I didn't alight the mark with the valve stem. Could this be the reason why it's clicking? Maybe it's just aligned for balancing reasons??

Mine clicked. I tightened them. They clicked again. I changed them. They had rust in them.

Where did you read this?

I adjusted, as per stated above, and the noise persisted on my '06 Ulysses. Replaced with taper bearings, all good now.

I read it in the online manual. There is a punch mark on the disc. I am going to align it with the valve stem today and see if it makes a difference. I suspect it will not.

I took the disc bolts and hardware off today and positioned the stamped punch mark on the rotor near the valve stem as the manual said. The clicking went away. I don't know if it was the punch mark alignment or one of the small spacers that contact the rim with the rotor bolt that was not seated.
Job done.

Yep! He's right there is a punch mark on one of the mount tabs(?) mine is within one mount, so it's staying.
No front end click either.

I found it mentioned in the service manual had I bothered to read it...

I had never seen that either. I cannot see it being more than a reference mark to be able to locate it back to the same side and same spot for the sake of it's hardware. I wonder if the replacement rotors have them?
