Been looking for over a year and finally scored an '08 Uly XT near my house. I wanted an '09 in blue or red but I got an '08 in black. Less than 12K miles, came with bar risers, K+N filter, tank bag and gold "X" model rear wheel (???). I'm still trying to determine if the rear wheel is a 3 bearing model. I got a screaming deal on it, partly because it's not perfect cosmetically. Pipes and exhaust are a bit rusty, minor scratches on luggage and passenger grab handle etc. But not terrible. The bike was stored outside (covered and under car port) for the last 2 years and it shows. Some bolts are a little rusty etc. But Hey! it was $4000!!

The first order of business will be to get a decent windscreen, probably a Madstad or Palmer unless there is something else you guys would recommend. Next will probably be exhaust and ecm, followed by paint (or trade plastics), and maybe powder coat some engine case covers and foot pegs to make it look morel like a 2009.

The shifter seems pretty stiff, not sure if that's normal or not.

If the rear axle is coated black, it's the upgraded wheel.

Congratulations, and welcome to BB&D.
I don't think there was much difference between '08 and '09 (someone will correct me).
My '07X came with the optional tall windscreen (same as your '08XT). I was sure I would need a bigger/better screen or adjustable brackets, but have ended up happy with the way it is. Just saying ride it for a while, you might like it the way it is.
The shifter may just seem stiff, depending on what you're used to, or there could be a problem. The trans/primary oil are separate from the motor oil. You'll probably want to change both if you don't know when they were changed last, and check the adjustment of the primary chain. This might help the shifting, but probably not a lot.

You're right about the windshield, it does a pretty good job as is, much better than the naked bikes I'm used to riding (SV). The only difference I am aware of between '08 and '09 models was the engine color, all black on '09. Looks much better. I know you can buy the black side cases new, but has anyone just had them powder coated? seems like it would be less expensive.

As a fellow new XT owner, may I suggest a set of T-Rex engine guards also. They are very functional, and to be honest, look badass.

Is that a Madstad windshild on your bike? Is it an 18" or 20"? Also, where did you get the little fairing wings on the forks?

Thanks!

Kevin

Doesn't this T-Rex increase vibrations on the bike?

I believe it is the 18" madstad, The wings are kuryakin or some aftermarket company made for touring bikes. Both were on the bike when I bought it. I will research more on them tonight when I get home. The t-rex does add vibration. I put some rubber washer bushings behind the bolts, and that has relieved some vibration. Its not bad, but you dont want to hang highway pegs off it, or else your feet will fall right asleep.

Looks like an 18" but let me know when you get a chance, I'm planning to order one this week. Also let know what you think about the wind protection and how tall you are. Thanks again,

Kevin

I measured it. 20" top to bottom. it has a 3.25 inch adjustment up, gives great wind protection, and I'm 6'0.

I think Memphis Shades made lower wind screens like those.

Joescrambled is that an Erik Buell signature on the tank/frame or are the Memphis shades rubbing the paint? Also I would suggest the adjustable windscreen brackets, I have them and they are very nice. Idk what brand they are though.

Yes, It is an Erik Buell Autograph on the frame. There is a better autograph on the other side. funny story behind it.
The previous owner Fotoguzzi is responsible for most of the mods on here, I just added crash bars. But Damn I love this Uly, so much fun., going to burn up the PR4's this summer, might try TKC80's in the fall.

I could be dreaming, but I notice that my shifting seems much smoother after a Primary fluid change and chain adjustment.

Maybe it is just because I am more aware and feeling for issues. But it always seems better. It's surprising what a fluid change will do. Of course I am also the type that thinks my engine runs smoother and cooler after an oil change. HA!!

Nice find for sure, enjoy!

PS: if that is all my '08 XT is worth these days, I am going to hang onto it forever and probably die with it.
