I've recently noticed squeaking coming from somewhere on my '08. The squeak cycled at about wheel speed and was most noticeable when pulling away from a stop, particularly after a cold start. Trying to listen, I really could not figure out where the squeaking was coming from, but did note that it seemed to disappear when coasting. Bearings were suspected.

With the rear wheel jacked up, I could give the wheel a quick spin forward and get a squeak. Nothing in reverse. Lots of close listening made it clear that the squeak did not come from the rear wheel bearings, the idler pulley, nor the countershaft. I was quite puzzled. I began to suspect the belt, but could see no unusual wear at either side. Checking alignment of the pulleys, I could see no problems.

I was pretty sure that the noise was connected to the belt, but did not know how. I got out my tin of Johnson's Paste Wax and spread a thin layer on both edges of the belt. The noise did not stop immediately but took quite a few spins of the wheel.

Today, still quite. We'll see how long this lasts. The belt has about 20k miles of use.

Interesting idea, Mark. Glad it worked. Thankfully, with my poor hearing and ear plugs, I haven't heard a squeaking sound. Those around me may but I don't. : )

Having taken the time to positively ID the problem, I think that the last time I replaced my rear wheel bearings it may have been unnecessary.

I have used HD's Polyoil on the belts on my Uly, HD and Bourget with good results over the past 20 years or so. https://www.popscreen.com/prod/MTgxMDY3NjA0/Harley -Davidson-Poly-Oil-Engine-Compensating-Sprocket-Lu be-Belt-Drive-Motorcycle

YMMV
