After a ride today I noticed that my right turn signal was loose right at the signal. Almost hanging. The signal still works but ... Those of you who have had this happen; what did you replace? The turn signal? The stand off too? I can slip it back on and all looks good but it is broken. The standoff looks fine but I'd appreciate input from those who have had a failure. I'm also tempted to replace the left side while I'm at it since the shield and windscreen have to come off to replace the signals. Recommendations on best place to get them? Thanks.

All 03-09 XBs and 02-up Blast use the same turn signals. If I'm understanding what you're saying, the signal itself is the part that's broken.

My right turn signal 'stem' is broken. I'm not sure they are all the same, Phelan. It seems the stems are different. I got the following info from American Sportbike's website: XB OEM Turn Signals. The Left Front is the same as the Right Rear, and Right Front is the same as the Left Rear, on all Firebolt models. The front turn signals on other models (X1, XB-S Lightning, XB12SS Lightning Long, and Ulysses models) have longer stalks. They look less bug like if replaced with these, though they might not technically meet separation requirements in some vehicle codes.
I'm guessing I just need the right turn signal for Uly's. The stand off should be fine.

I could be wrong, but I always thought the standoffs were more or less interchangeable. But the Ulys do have longer stalks of the fronts, correct. Many people like to put shorter stalk front signals on to reduce flopping at low revs and reduce risk of breaking them in case of a tip over.

Thank you Phelan. Much appreciated. I'll have to think about stalk, or stem, length. Have you ever had a turn signal stem failure? I think I'll just replace the turn signals on the front and leave the existing standoffs.

I've broken one or two : p . I have EBR signals now though, so been several months since I played with XB signals.

I recently replaced my longer front blinkers with shorter ones and like the look much better. Ordered the replacements from American Sport Bike but don't know if they still have stock or not.

The only real difference between all the XB r and s turn signals is the color of the wire and the drain hole located on the bottom.

Yes I replaced with rear oem signals. The Hawaiian sun did a number on the rubber of my old ones which I why I ended up replacing them.

Thanks Tribe. Tape is going on mine in the morning too. I'll order new ones tomorrow. The replacement seems pretty straight forward. Heck, I think even I can do it. : )

Perhaps one of the threaded ends just came unthreaded? Happened to me once.

I'm cheap and just ordered some LED replacements. I just had to drill out the hole slightly larger, but they worked pretty well.

The end shells of the signals have a top and bottom (look for the drain hole) side, making them right-ish and left-ish.

The reflector has two 'teeth' which hold the shell to the stalk. When these teeth break, the shell flops about. The only permanent repair is replacement, although you could glue the shell to the stalk.

These are the two lengths that came from the factory. The longer cable it to accommodate the Outdoorsman luggage.

Thanks guys. I will definitely check out the stalk tomorrow and look for the drain hole and teeth, Mark. One, or both, of the teeth must have broken, given that the reflector was hanging. Duct tape will have to suffice until I get a replacement. Thanks.

I put aux lights where my turn signals were, and have 1125CR mirrors with the signals built in. I changed to the LED flasher relay from American Sport Bike at the same time.

The pieces aren't unobtanium. I think I ordered mine through American Sport Bike a few years back and IIRC, they weren't even that expensive. They began to sag over time and then cracked in the 'valleys' of the flexi stalk.

The hardest part is getting to the wiring to disconnect everything and get them loose to pull out.

I think, and I could be wrong, if you see yours beginning to sag, the inevitability of full droop, cracking and, sadly, replacement has found you. Its just a matter of when, not if, you replace them (unless of course you want to tape and splint, which I did for a while).

Thankfully, there are aftermarket units available, as some have mentioned, but the OEMs aren't (or weren't) hard to come by.

**And my problem children were the right side blinkers also.

Very cool setup, Ratbuell. I like that.

Thank you,Jake. My local Harley shop is a Buell support shop and I placed the order this morning. Inexpensive at $20., thankfully. When you say the 'hardest part' were you referring to the removal of the windscreen to get to the wires? I'm hoping that once I remove the windscreen I'll see the two wires 'clearly', : ) and easily unplug the old and plug in the new. Is it that straight forward?

Both my right side signals started sagging and cracking, I used tape and aluminum strips to splint them up for a while, but finally the front stalk fell apart. I replaced them with these copycats:

http://www.amazon.com/Tinted-Motorcycle-Turn-Signa ls-Kawasaki/dp/B005CL6LZU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1 430060162&sr=8-2&keywords=buell+turn+signals

Make no mistake these are cheaply made. The clear parts feel brittle. The connectors are too small so I swapped them for Ace Hardware bullets and tried them out. Within hours a couple of them quit, and one of the amber domes broke at the tab. Turns out one of the crap bulbs just quit, the others the thin wires started breaking and/or unraveling their twist. Yes they actually just twist the wire end to the bulb socket ground.

I have them working after lots of mods. Bigger wire, EIKO 10w 5008 bulbs (would have used the quality original Osrams but they're too tall), soldered the ground wires to brass washers that fit the socket bottoms, soldered the power wires to flattened spent Berdan rifle primers for contacts on the fiber discs, rubber washers under the amber dome tabs.

That's too much work IMO and even now the amber domes are starting to distort from heat, but at least they look closer to stock, they're bright enough in daylight and won't sag. Next time I'm getting some quality LED's.

BuellerXT,

The fronts were fairly simple and like you observe, its a matter of getting behind the windscreen.

I think it was the rears that gave me a headache...I'm recalling an inner fender cover that had to be removed to gain access to the bullet connectors and I tried to do it in a rush ("oh, this should only be a 5 minute quick-turn task").

Like you, I'm lucky that Seminole HD here in Sanford (FL) is still willing to open the Buell parts book and look up numbers and parts. I had to get them to order me a new rear wheel valve stem and they did so willingly and without sighing, eye-rolling or placating.

Well it's been a while for this thread but I thought I would see anyhow. I need to replace my front turn signals on my 2008 XB12XT and I can find the stock signals, I can't find the spacers the front uses. Anyone find a good signal that's solid or know a source for the spacers?

Thank you!
