FYI. I don't know if this has been posted on before, but I had an oil line come loose. Upon inspection the clip that holds the lines on from the oil cooler to the engine had loosened and allowed the fitting to dis-connect. Upon close inspection the clip itself was worn on all three points where it contacts the flange. I inspected the other three lines and they too were worn. The lines/clips from the swing arm to the engine were not worn. This is a potentially catastrophic engine failure situation along with oil sprayed out onto the tire causing a crash. I recommend you check/replace all your clips. The clips are available at AutoZone or Harley. My bike has 40k miles. I was going to post some pictures, but can't seem to get that working. I had it happen on my '08 XB12XT this past October. After I posted, someone mentioned that someone in Australia had the same thing happen. I've got 65K, + or -, on mine with about 34K on the current motor. Not sure what all was replaced when the motor was replaced. I doubt the problem is with the clip. I was just going to put a new clip in mine and resume accumulating miles, until I looked in the service manual. The service manual shows the 'flange' around the end of the oil line completely formed - i.e. without the notches that the (presumed) failed oil line has. My replacement oil line finally arrived while I was back home for Christmas break. The line didn't take too long to get - the fact that the parts book descriptions and illustration made me order the wrong line the first time (after taking a few weeks to realize that I should replace the line) are to blame for my delay. I've never been 'the sky is falling kind of guy' but, after seeing this happen to me and others, I would think that all '08-'10 XB bikes would be susceptible to this and would probably add this to my list of maintenance activities... Suddenly I am short $0.02, 1313 |

I inspected the flange which was worn at one point. All other lines showed no wear on the flange. I surmised that the engine vibration shakes the clips which wear on the tabs and the flange. I did notice the clips seemed loose. Perhaps a piece of heat shrink tubing around the clips would prevent a future problem. |
