And no, it's not talk like a pirate day either. Two weeks ago I got a new battery, last Sunday I put 240 miles on the bike with no problems. Going in to work Monday the CEL comes on, was off going home. Weather turned crappy so I parked it a couple of days but Thursday was off and on again. Ran okay so didn't think it was too serious, finally checked for codes. Damn code 16 again, this will be VR number four. This time I'm going with the Shindengen kit and hopefully being done with this once and for all. | ||

Maybe a bad ground or bad connector someplace is either giving you a false diagnosis or causing the VR's to fail? | ||

A weird smell and fluctuating battery meter light prompted me to inspect the stator/VR connector yesterday. Fried. Came apart in chunks and the pins slid out of the sockets they were so loose. Hope I caught it in time before the stator or VR got damaged. I'm going to connect the wires directly together and order up some replacement connectors. Looks like a good source for connectors if they sell in small quantities. The Deutsch connectors they list are too small for VR connections though. Still, they are used other places like the diag port. I should have the Shindengen kit in another day or two. I think they recommend wiring the battery direct to the VR but I don't know what they do about the stator. Guess I'll find out when I see what's in the kit. | ||

Deutsch part numbers for the stockers: Plug # DTP06-4S Receptacle # DTP04-4P And the compatibles are USA-made! (I called.) As far as the contacts yes they only sell the 12-14 AWG, I did run across 10 AWG the other day but can't remember where, or whether they were the size 12 DTP. I'll have to look. For that matter I'm not positive of the factory stator to VR wire size, if I can get the Deutsch contacts in 10 AWG that's where I'm going. | ||

The DTP solid pin and socket terminals are only 12-14 AWG but they do offer an open barrel pin and socket for 10 AWG. However, the DTP series connectors are only rated for up to 25 amps where as the charging system is 30 amps. Considering the number of changes Buell went through on these connectors until the ones that were finally introduced with the 08 and newer bikes, I'd prefer overkill. Now the HD30 series connectors will handle 100 amps, but the plugs are all multi pin and huge. I'm debating using a 480 or 630 series sealed Metri-Pack connector which are good for 42 and 46 amps respectively. That's if I want the convenience of easy removal for repair work later on, or I'll just hardwire the whole damned thing. | ||

If I'm not mistaken I think that Metri-Pack 280 looks suspiciously like the dreaded "77-connector", down to the contacts. I'm hardwiring mine sometime this week until I get the connector system chosen. | ||

OMG what was I thinking. I don't know if I should blame this on a brain fart, senior moment or temporary loss of sanity. Here I'm trying to decide on a connector so that the charging system will still be "serviceable" without cutting wires. Guess what, the Shindengen VR is plug in all by itself. If you want to test the stator or something just unplug the damn thing, duh. | ||

Yeah I used the original VR's stator lead to make my Shindengen harness. Make sure all the pins/sockets at the stator end are in good shape though, they must fit snugly together. I found the 10awg contacts I was looking for Wednesday and ordered 10 of each: http://www.deutschconnector.com/products/deutsch_p ins_and_sockets/deutsch_dtp_pins_and_sockets/ Arrived today already, VA to CA 2 days! Weren't cheap but they are sweet, tomorrow I build 2 new harnesses. I'll have to wait on the connectors though, so for now I'll make 1 new stock length, and 1 extended so I can move the VR up into my fairing (another project I'm working on...). |
