I'd go with the LED's at this point if I was doing it again. Not sure which is the best setup, but that at least narrows you to a technology. | ||

I just picked up piaa 55w motovisions off of Amazon. I went with the mosfet shindig rent regulator, so I passed on leds. I'll let you know soon as I install them | ||

Are you worried that an LED bulb won't draw enough power, and the extra heat will end up in the shunt regulator? Interesting. That would be the case. | ||

Bill, my thought was like others have experienced, the mosfet reg virtually eliminates the spikes of high and low volts of the stocker, these new lights should last much longer thus no reason to spend big bucks on a led conversion | ||

Ferris, if both of your lights are out at the same time, you may already have a charging system problem. Your new lamps might burn out also. | ||

They didn't burn out at the same time, I was just lazy and didn't change out the high beam which burned out 1000 miles ago, and now the low went out. I stuck some Silverstar Ultras in for now, will try the PIAA's when they come in. The hole in the middle of the light bucket, with the rubber wired plug stuck in it- what does that do? It was out when I removed the assembly, but I stuck it back in... Thanks for all the help guys! | ||

The small bulb in the center is the "parking" light. If you have the key in ACC, it turns that light and the taillight on. It's a Euro thing. I'm still thrilled with my DDM 4300K HID low beam...but there's some installation involved. | ||

My vr went bad, I bought an oem replacement that was doa.I then decided to go with the mosfet unit. Unless your VR is on its way out, you'll be ok. | ||

the Silverstar Ultras are a huge improvement over the previous, probably stock lights... The drawback is (as shown on the back of the package), the life of these bulbs is inversely proportional to their increased brightness. If they're twice as bright as the stockers, they'll last half as long. | ||

Thanks TwistedUly. Thanks Hugh, I already bought the PIAA's so if they go bad, I'll have a better reason to install my new ones, they should be here Monday, if these go bad Tuesday, I'm all set!  They were easy in and out, so I'm fine with them, and I think I paid $30 after a rebate for the Silverstar Ultras. | ||

Been using them for years. I did burn up a connector due to corrosion but don't think it was the bulbs fault. Never had an issue with the lens. It's a H9 bulb put on a H7 base. 2100 lumen's and it can do it without running hotter. | ||

I see. Some of the LED units probably have built in voltage regulation, some may not. The spikes will destroy other even more expensive things (like speed sensors and crank position sensors), so I'd personally make sure that issue is fixed, then put in LED bulbs (which will draw less current, put out less heat, turn on instantly, and be more reliable in the long term. Though like I said, my DDM HID setup was pretty reliable and were pretty cheap. | ||

It is not the amount of light as much as the color and focus of it that is important. I used PIAA XTREME WHITE PLUS 4000K lamps on my bike but they were not all that much better than the Philips Moto-Visions I had before. They certainly did not justify the huge cost nor the claim of "55w = 110w". There is no stated light output on the box either. I now use 55w Halogen equivalent 6000K HIDs and are just outstanding. They make PIAAs look like rubbish. They cost much less and even came with a two year warranty on the electronic parts. | ||

I've been running the Cyclops LED conversion this season. They have been very good, price was very good and light output is better than the halogen bulbs I was previously running. Installation was a snap. | ||

Rode last night, Silverstar Ultras are really nice. I ordered and received the PIAA's and will hold them for later, unless someone tells me that its such a huge difference that I should put them in and save the Silverstars. Thanks for everyones input! | ||
