I can see it now. I'll make these air bag crutches and Vern will trip me so the airbags go off above the firewood, he stole from somebody else, and the explosion will ignite his campfire!

If he succeeds and I survive, will somebody hand me a beer!

No worries Greg. I'll keep an extra beer in my other hand for you. It'll be good to go unless we use it to put your fire out.

So I guess my original post did sort of go along with the theme of this thread but has since turned into lame humor and an inside joke. So to not be accused of hyjacking this thread I hereby attempt to return to the original subject matter once again.

So I hobbled past the Uly today and noticed a pool of oil underneath it the size of a nickel. It's been sitting in the same place for two months now and I'm thinking I should either overhaul the engine or sell it before it detonates!?

Get a big round magnet on a stick and put in the oil tank, see if you have any metal shavings in the oil. If not, maybe it's base gasket or?

'Where did the oil come from?' seems like the most pertinent question in this case.

The oil spot is probably just a few Uly tears since it is just sitting there missing life.

To the original topic.....the last week or so I have walked by my Uly and looked intently at it as I enter my shed to turn on the air compressor. I have been thinking heavily about changing that front tire.....

Trevd-they are michelin 2CTs

I am in the same boat, only ever get 4 or 5k myself, I dont know if its a uly thing with these tires or not? Its the set the PO put on right before I bought it about 5 months ago. I have ran just about every type of "sport touring" tires in the last 15 years, except for these particular ones.

I put on scorpion trails this time, we will see how they do

Vern, I think you might be right. It is Uly tears! Looks like they are coming from the breather hose! Poor baby, just sitting there doing nothing. Hmmm, sounds like I have a lot in common with my motorcycle!

What did I do?

Replaced the lock cylinders on my Hepco Becker top case with locks that match my Buell side cases.

Easy enough to do, took about 6 weeks to finally get the lock cylinders from Harley-Davidson. Just needed the key number to order the lock cylinders and needed to show the bike registration to the parts ordering lady.

I ordered two locks from Buell/HD as there are two locks on the top case. What I received were two parts bags, each bag had two lock cylinders and one key. Cost for each bag was just $19.

So there you go in case anyone needs this info.

Got my lock cylinders at Moto Machines www.motomachines.com/ .... they were just under 16 bucks...

Took about a week to get and they have a bunch of different key numbers in stock...

I saw this thread a while back.... so I will throw in that I repositioned my ECM about 2 weeks ago... much cleaner than using a block to keep the seat from touching the ECM.

Next project is to construct a pseudo fairing made from Lexan. I did add some "lowers" that extend from the factory fly screen. They did help but didn't go low enough. Have plans to construct a larger set soon.....

Well not today but in august I put on a new rear tire and changed the fork oil.Set the damper rod adjustments just right and the bike has never rode or handled better.Still enjoying this bike after seven years.

Also, not today, but I had gotten a code 37 the last few times out, so this week, I removed and cleaned off my VSS. If my hands were any bigger, I'd probably still be working on it...

Day before yesterday I replaced the rear tire with a new PR4... Rode a couple hundred miles yesterday and decided to change the front this morning. Good thing I did, the stock front bearing is feeling kinda notchy... Searched a bit on the internet for the best bearing and after all that placed an order with Al at Americansportbike for bearings and spacer... I have 24K on this bike. I love the Uly!

Got it running only to have a check engine lamp on. Code 21. I think I'll see if it goes away since I didn't mess with it at all when I drained the battery. Also took it for a short road test. Man, it feels good to ride again.

I should add this. Pretty much the only thing I've done to this bike is ride it. I bought it with 8K on the clock. Put a fresh set of PR3's on it and rode it until the first rear wore out. Another rear tire this spring and rode it until that one was nearly gone. Change the oil, gas up and go.

Recently I've put in a Kuryakyn voltmeter, MRA X-creen, a relay for the fan (grounds straight to the battery now), Right side scoop, bolted a top box onto the triple tail and have now pulled the fuel pump as I have an intermittent fuel light issue.

Took it out for a very nice 110 mile spin in our gorgeous weather, cleaned the few bugs off, and let it rest! : )

I finally got my hands on an XT rear shock and kickstand a couple of weeks ago. I had the day off, so that was my Uly task for today.

I had to unbolt the rear subframe and pivot it back on the luggage bracket bolts slightly to get clearance to remove the fan shroud. The shock had to come out through the top so that the remote compression adjuster could come with it. I checked the remote pre-load adjuster on the "new" XT shock, disconnected the line, and topped it off with fork oil which gave me ~4 more turns of adjustment on it. No issues getting the new shock installed.

In front, I reinstalled my 1" Precision Engineering bar risers. This gives enough space to raise the forks in the triple trees 1" to match the rear. Of course first the forks had to slide down so I could get the snap rings off to enable the forks to move higher in the trees. I had to remove the front wheel so I could rotate the fork leg with the disk caliper enough to get enough slack in the brake line to get the fork down far enough to get the snap ring off the top. Whew!

The standard X kickstand seems to work fine, so I haven't changed to the XT stand yet. Perhaps my pivot has enough wear in it to let the bike lean enough.

I just gave it a quick ride around the neighborhood. It feels a little different, but I think I can quickly get use to it. The 1" shorter reach to the ground is appreciated. Ideally, I'll find a set of XT forks but I've never seen a set of used ones show up on eBay. Not sure if new ones are still available or not. I'll ride it like this for a while and see if I think the XT forks would be worth the investment.

Could you just raise your forks in the triple tree clamps? I'd consider going this way too, my Uly sees very little off road and I'm sure I'd never miss that one inch of suspension travel.

I did (see paragraph 3 above). The complication is you have to install bar risers to have enough clearance under the handlebars to be able to raise the forks; fortunately I already had a set.

I am going to install the XT kickstand when I get a chance. The X kickstand works OK on level or favorably slanted pavement, but if the ground is uneven or slanted the wrong way, the stand is too long. Unfortunately you have to drop the muffler to gain access to the kickstand bolts so that makes it a bigger job than it should be. Maybe this weekend.
