The other day the CEL on my 09 came on after starting the bike to come home for work. It seemed to be running ok and I didn't notice any problems when driving surface streets so I figured muffler valve actuator. Sure enough, when doing the test, the actuator made some quiet grinding noises and didn't move.

The interesting thing though, was the CEL blinked out a string of numbers: 2-1-4. As you might know, the code for the muffler actuator is 21. I'm not sure what the 4 would be for if this is actually is a trouble code.

Does anyone know for sure what is going on with the light? I didn't find anything about it during a quick page through the diagnostic manual or the service manual.

I believe all the codes are two digits. after the second digit there comes four quick flashes (intermission), then you get the next stored code or a repeat of the first, if there is only one code stored.
This is my understanding.

Well, the CEL cleared itself this morning, I must have had a rock on top of the muffler keeping the cam from rotating. I did short the two pins on the diagnostic connector together to get the code through the check engine light, and it was a 21.

I wonder if it's an ID code or flash version or something similar?

Well, I emailed IDS today (the people that did the ECM designs for Buell) and asked about it, and my hunch was right:

"While performing the muffler test, you also triggered the ECM calibration identification feature. This feature is required in some countries to allow law enforcement to verify emissions compliance. The CEL blinks out Series, Market, and Revision. 2-1-4 indicates XB12, US, Rev 4."

Weird that they didn't put any of that in any of the manuals.

Thanks for that info. I'm thinking in 25 years well still be finding out quirks in the build of these bikes.
