Leaving the state of Massholes on August 1 to SD to see the end of the Rally and ride some of those roads out there. Also want to ride on through to Yellowstone. I know a bunch of you guys have been there in that area. Looking for good roads, food, and places to see. Thanks

You will have a great time. Don't forget to find the good stuff along the way. Are you riding the entire way out? That's quite the journey.

Once in the black hills, there are all sorts of roads. You will find a pad of tear-off maps at most places. These road maps show the local towns and sites along the roads. There are scenic roads not to miss of course.

Making the loop through the hills will take you to towns like: Sturgis, Rapid City, Keystone, Custer, Deadwood. And there are a number of routes to get you there: Iron Mountain road, needles highway etc.

The national monuments are worth doing the touristy thing and visiting. Find a local or someone with a few patches, they will point you the way.

Don't forget about the local VFW's and Legions as well as churches. Most of these places work with the boy scouts to put on breakfasts and lunches that are a great deal and support the community.

Have fun! Post up any questions you may have.

The Black Hills are magical! Getting there can be a ride through the furnace! Temps over 100 common. The Black Hills cool off 15 or more degrees from anywhere around it. As mentioned you can find the tear off maps at gas stations and restaurants. These are pretty detailed. I've ridden every paved road and most of the gravel in the Black Hills. Nothing is bad and a few are don't miss. I would say as far as fun goes, Needles Highway is a hoot on the Buell but Harley traffic really sucks so go there early. Requires a Park Pass but worth it and it's good all week. From Rushmore take 16 to 16A and enjoy the corkscrew bridges and the scenery though the tunnels. When it ends turn right and get your pass for needles.

Get new tires before you leave. I've done more than one trip where I left thinking "there's enough left on there".

There's not.

Long run like that, I'd suggest something along the lines of a dual compound PR3 or PR4 so you can rack up highway miles on the hard center, but still have gummy side sections for the twisties.

Photos or it didn't happen! : )

Ford--
FWIW, I'm a local. +100 on the free tear-off roadmaps!
I avoid Sturgis proper when I can, and the fun roads have been clogged with 'tourists' for weeks now. 16A that Tootal is referring to is the Iron Mountain Road, it was just repaved in fresh asphalt, and it's best views are from south to north, the three tunnels going that direction frame views of Mt. Rushmore. Watch out for bison, elk white-tail and mule deer, but especially people on motorcycles who really can't ride.
I've also got a garage, tools and an '09 service manual, if needed. BH-HD in Rapid City is supposed to be OK for parts, fortunately, I haven't needed them, and, they don't answer the phone during Rally.

RatBuell... Have new Road 2 on. So all set. And I will post pics for proof lol

Daddio. Thanks for the info on Maps. I know the roads are going to be full of posers clogging up everything. Only going to stop in to see the crazies in Downtown. More in it for the trip, views and roads. Heading onto Yellowstone.

Daddio and Foto hoping I don't need help from breaking down. But I may take you up on it.

Tootal. Good info on roads! Thanks

Been looking forward to trip

Great video as always! Loved the special effects and great editing. I must say, I've never seen the buffalo up on the road in the Black Hills. I have in Yellowstone and that's a little scary when traffic stops and you don't have doors!

If you are taking the Northern Route along Lake Superior for some reason and need anything coming across MN or ND, I am in a suburb of Fargo.

I have garage space, tools, service manual and a guest room. I doubt you will come this far north, but you never know. The ride home through Canada North of Lake Superior is amazing that time of year!!

Yo barry! That is going to be a great ride. Been to the Moto GP and was great. Maybe I will see you on the road? Two coasts meet up on Ulys.

Biff. Not sure of taking the Northern route. But if I do I appreciate the offer.

Ford- I would recommend taking HWY 44 as you travel west across SD. Great two lane through beautiful country and avoids the traffic of I90. At Winner SD you can chose to stay on 44 and travel through some of the Badlands or take HWY 18 through the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Reservations. Both are excellent routes that will take you right into the Black Hills.

I'm getting on my Buell on Saturday and riding to ID to meet up with friends as they return from Sturgis. We have plotted a course across OR to the coast for the cool ride home to the California Central Coast. Seven days on the Uly. Cannot wait.

Hope you both, Barry and FHL, have fun, safe rides.

FHL, I can get the PR 2's installed from one of the rally vendors here for $644. $664 for the PR 3's. Just wondering if you or anyone else can tell me if this is a reasonable price? I haven't shopped around locally yet, just decided to check one of the vendors here for the rally and he had what I'm looking for.

Sounds high, but food is always expensive at the fair...

I looked at denniskirk.com and found the front for $121.88 and rear for $157.88 + $10 shipping. I will be going this route.

Do you have a way to mount them? Even dealers can charge $60 per tire for tire off bike, and may not even touch them if they didn't sell them.

So $300 dennis kirk prices for the tire, plus $120 for mounting, and you are up to $420 for "normal discount retail and a lot of humping parts and bits around".

Not far between there and $644 if they are removing the wheel, and if they are at a venue where people to do maintenance are outnumbered by people needing maintenance by a huge margin (thus "food at the fair" comment).

It's a gouge for sure though, don't get me wrong. It may just be one you are stuck with.

Reepicheep-I am due for 10k maintenance and the guy I go to for service can mount the tires for me (in a couple weeks when things quiet down around here). I heard that some of the rally vendors had good tire deals so that is what got me looking. I suppose that may be true in some cases but I think that you are correct about the "food at the fair"....not critical for me to get it done immediately so I will probably wait.

I did notice that the guys at the burnout pits sold crap loads of tires. Of course most of the sizes and models being the ones the Chrome Couch guys were asking for.

Size and type of tire options may be limited at the rally, but be sure to bring that special axle socket!

It is amazing to see the piles of burnt up tires that are being swapped out on the spot.

Maybe this is your year to be a part of the burn out contest! Find a local, and have your tires shipped to them in the hills.

Hey Curtis,

Im delivering a car to Montana- leaving the 5th. Im looking to buy a Uly out west and ride it home, when are you thinking about driving back? (I live in maine) A few thousands miles with a fellow Buell rider would be fun! I should be at sturgis (in a car unfortunately ) around the 7th- then off Yellowstone, Montana and Seattle where I hope to find a bike and ride with my brother for a few days.

Klinc,

I live in the Seattle area and I have an 08 Uly with 30K miles on it. I'm *considering* whether or not to sell it, since I'm mostly riding my Triumph these days. I haven't prepped it for sale, and in fact haven't decided to sell, but your post got me thinking. Ping me if you want to have a discussion. No hurry and no pressure, like I said, I'm pondering. It does have a complete set of bags....

I rode out to Sturgis from Omaha on my 06' ULY on Monday and rode back yesterday ( Thursday), about 600 miles each way. No problems and my ULY now has over 51,000 miles.

Vanocker Canyon Road between Sturgis and Nemo was claiming lives and injuries and I saw the aftermath of a couple of those accidents. Funny thing is that the accidents were both on Wednesday about 3 or 4 hours apart and happened at exactly the same spot and I mean within a 10 ft area. The second guy seemed like he was in real bad shape and was life flighted to the Rapid City by helicopter. Too many trailer queens that ride lumbering cruisers through corners without experience. 9 had lost their lives by Wednesday within the Black Hills area.

Coming back by way of Interstate 90 across South Dakota I saw and guy on a Buell without a windshield. Speed limit was 80 mph and he might have been doing 70. I have a large windshield on my bike and 80 mph was a day in the park behind it. The guy on the windshield-less Buell wasn't having fun and when I honked as I passed he could hardly turn his head to look because of the wind.
