Grrr.....

This is the THIRD oil cooler I've had on my 06 Uly. And...it's the THIRD oil cooler to piss oil all over my left boot. They don't leak from the fittings (I've been using -AN fittings for years on bracket race cars, I know how to clean and torque them properly). They leak from the cooler grid itself. My suspicion is, the relatively stiff braided lines push/pull on the cooler too much, and it stress cracks.

Anyone else have issues with leaking coolers? Or do I have another issue somewhere that I need to chase down before I trash another cooler?

Anyone retrofit a different cooler or line setup onto an '06?

My original was replaced under warranty for the same reason, but I've had no issues since. IIRC the manual states the importance of the position and angle of the plastic keeper that holds the lines together in front of the crankcase, maybe that's relevant?

Huh. No problems with leaking oil coolers on either my XB9 or Uly (60k miles between them).

Since it's a repeating problem, maybe there's a problem with the lines or the mounts that physically stressing the cooler?

The 08-up XB's use non-braided lines, and IIRC Dr. Greg had some of those made up for his 06 Uly when one of the originals wore through. Maybe getting new, more-flexible lines would help?

Good info all. I'll definitely look at the spacer spec. First cooler was replaced under warranty, I've done the subsequent ones myself. Nothing strikes me as out of whack as far as bracket/mounting torque. I may try to source "softer" lines...

One of the ideas I have for my KRS fairing project is moving the cooler up into the fairing, I'm interested in custom lines also so report back!

36k on my '06 and no problems with cooler leak.
That said; I now expect to see one on the next ride...

I did have to replace mine once. It had a very small leak, and only occasionally would drip, and that would blow back on my shoe. Also, made a mess on the cooler itself. But I don't know a cause of the failure. Just assumed it was a faulty unit.

I have been noticing some oil film around the bottom left corner of the cooler on my bike (sitting on the bike). It isn't enough to drain on my boot but have been noticing a nickel/quarter size spot in the garage. Mine is also an 06 with 40k miles on it.

Well this is a problem I haven't had.....yet!


The fittings leaked a little when it was new, I tightened them a bit and that seems to have fixed it for the first 61,000 miles thus far. On that note.....be sure to use a backup wrench on the cooler side so that you are not transferring torque to the body of the cooler.

Yep, I always use an "other side" wrench. And, I know the sealing surface isn't the threads, but the taper, and I never over-torque.

I may just get some -AN to hose barb fittings, and put plain ol' rubber hoses on it to see how long the next cooler lasts...
