I think it was a sub batch of the 07's, and that sub batch did seem to go into the Uly's, but there could have been (and were) non Uly's with a disproportionate number of crank failures.

On another listen of the second video I can hear the noise.

I do not know this engine well enough to give a 100% answer to the problem however it sounds like, as best as I can tell, that it is not there all the time nor under load. It sounds to me, again as best I can tell, like maybe shaft end float, a loose/ broken spring on something (head valve?) or something has worked loose someplace and is rattling about. Very hard to tell though.

I had an 8 cylinder engine one time that had a barely bent exhaust valve. It had a slight miss all of the time and a slight knock sound in the block. The PO had run it that way a long time. I think that the knock was caused by the piston not being pushed all of the way down it's compression stroke, kind of making the piston skirt rattle in the bore.

A sponsor of my then race car gave it to me to rebuild when their mechanics gave up on it as needing a rebuild. Short on time and money, and having another set of heads ready, I did a head swap/valve job on it. It ran great with no more knock. The compression on that cylinder was down about 20%, which should have been worse for the miss and noise it made. I ran the crap out of that engine in my race car for a season and a half.

Knocks can be mysterious and tough to diagnose some times.

Uly_Man- It does make that knock much worse on load. Has a gallop which seems to me related to crank.
Thanks

Could be a sticking valve causing the back firing and the poor running, with intermittent
good running.

I thought about that. Would compression diagnose a sticky valve?

I found an 08 xb12 firestorm motor. The guy is asking $500. He bought it off ebay for a chopper but wants it gone. I think I can get it for $200-300. It has no throttle body and it's "stuck in gear". I am better to swap crank and part out the rest of engine or fix tranny with my tranny parts and swap motor with new wiring harness and ecm and oil cooler?

It's a lot of work to move the crank over: disassemble both engines, split cases, remove crank and rods, plus I believe you have to replace the left side crank bearing in your 07 cases with an 08 bearing, then button everything back up. On the plus side, you don't have to buy a new ECM, wiring harness, throttle body, oil cooler, etc. You gain the stouter 08 crank and rods. You don't gain the improved oiling system of the 08 engine.

Swapping the crank sounds like it'd be your least expensive option, especially when you consider you can sell off the excess parts from the 08 engine, but it involves a lot of precision work compared to just swapping the complete engine.

Do I potentially need to split cases on the 08 motor to fix the transmission?

That's the only way to fix an XB trans. Requires a complete tear down of the engine, but if you just want the parts you're going to do that anyway. Of course you could get lucky and find something jammed in the primary.

The only way you would be lucky enough to fix that tranny issue without a major teardown is if the shifter problem was in the primary.
Like if the shifter shaft was bent from a crash or something.
Something I wouldn't wager money on though!

Well it has no primary. So I bet I''d have to split the cases.A lot of risks...

It's not a "risk" anymore.
The chopper monkey verified that the tranny issue is inside the cases for you.

He saved you time : )

If there's no primary, you'll need an 08 crankshaft sprocket and bolt to use that crank in your 07 engine.
