Has anyone ever used a belt dressing on their Ulysses drive belt? I've heard of people using it on their car's fan belt but I've never heard of anyone using it on a motorcycle drive belt before! Fire away! | ||

Most belt dressings are a sticky, spray-on product that helps to keep V-belts from slipping. The Uly's belt drive is a toothed belt that can not slip, so it doesn't need dressing. | ||

I think the Harley guys have some sort of spray for their belts. I think it's supposed to be protective or something. Probably just penis beauty cream for people with too much money. | ||

My second belt looks like it's fraying on the edges and I was wondering if anything would help this last longer | ||

"My second belt looks like it's fraying on the edges and I was wondering if anything would help this last longer". This should NOT happen and could be due to the pulleys being pulled out of alignment/ twisted, etc. Check your rear wheel bearings as a starting point. | ||

Really, fraying belt stuff again? sigh.... Belts are made as SHEETS, then cut to width. Fraying is NORMAL. There is a woven core in the belt. When they cut the material...it frays. If you start to lose chunks of rubber? Worry. If you see the tan cloth stuff fraying a bit on the edges? Go ride more. It's fine. | ||

That was kinda what I was thinking Joe but I thought if there was something I could put on the belt to help it even if it did' help, it might just look better! | ||

Every so often my Uly will develop a squeak/creak sound. It is especially noticeable at low speed, when accelerating from a stop. After checking everything else, it turned out to be the belt. A little paste wax on the edges stops the sound. | ||

To make the frayed side of a belt look better i jacked up the rear wheel and as I turned the tire I used a LARGE black magic marker held against the offending edge until it looked like a spit shinned shoe. Repeated later after many miles. Looks great 20k later. | ||

The belt has a number of fabric type elements. One are the single cords that go around the belt which are probably the base of the belts build. Another are the individual twisted cords which are the strength of the belt. I think there are about 7 of these and made of Kevlar. It should not be an issue unless these are damaged. The belt should track near perfectly and not touch either the outer side of the front pulley or the inner side of the rear pulley all the time. Or at least it would if the suspension was not loading/ unloading it due to its long travel. This would cause the belt to track side ways once in a while but the odd "rub" is not a problem. I would still be inclined to give the bike a "once over" to ensure all is well. Just me though. |
