Looks like my new (to me) 06 uly is the latest to have this failure. I pm'ed tootal to see if he still has any of the ones left that he made up years ago, but in the meantime, I had a question about part interchangeability.

I was looking at used ones on epay and see a lot of xb9 ones. These are 2 pieces, with the manifold separate from the throttle body. Anybody know if this type will work on my uly?

Thanks

IIRC the XB9 is smaller, but I could be wrong. I do believe the TPS is different on '03-'04 models than the '05-'06(or '07?) models. I know '08 is different than the '06, but '07 was a slightly different head so I'm curious which it has.

07 shaft is different from 06, the at least xb9 2007 looks like the xb12 not sure if its the same.
from 06 to 07 the dicerence is on the metal piece tha moves the tps 06 was horizontal an 07 is vertical

It happened to me too...I'm sure Greg will help you out if he can...i don't think a 9 TB will work,...There are a few people that part these bikes out and i believe i know where theres a 12 TB to be had for about $100...but i would recommend Tootals shaft instead,...that way you don't have to worry about it happening again ...Also...when mine went...i had to rotate the engine to replace the shaft...and i took the opportunity to upgrade the seals to the Oberon set up...a little work is involved but they are pretty much leak proof so when your done its one less thing to never have to worry about again. If Tootal can't help say so and i'll locate a TB for you.

I just got an 06 too with 48k miles on it and it runs great.... I am hoping the previous owner/owners already addressed this issue !

Not sure if you looked for the shaft on American Sport Bike, but they have one if Greg doesn't.

A lot more expensive, but at least it is there if you need it. Please keep us posted!

Alive is the only way I can be. I cannot afford to die!

Buelltoberfest sounds like a good plan.....I got to get past the WVBR first though.

WVBR is a really good time, unfortunately my two weeks include the week before Sturgis and the week of. By brother and I are heading to Sturgis on the Buells the week before the rally and then head to Colorado during the rally. Ready for more Jeep trails. We'd like to ride Black Bear pass just to see if the Uly can make it. Anyway, I'm back to work right before the WV rally.

Next year I will be retired and hit them ALL!

Anybody that has pulled the throttle body, did you have to rotate the engine down? I followed the manual and can't get the intake manifold flange bolts loose, no room to work a wrench, even made a stubby about 2 inches long, but no joy?

You need half moon wrenches. No need to rotate engine.

I guess I've been lucky or maybe the PO addressed the shaft. My bike has 71,000 miles and no issue yet. I've been thinking about changing it anyway, as we have a couple 09 TBs here at the shop, but it would be a lot of work to make fit. If going through the effort I might as well modify it to a 52mm throttle body instead of the stock 49.

I suspect (but can't prove) that rerouting the breathers out of the intake is a factor on throttle shaft wear.

Reepicheep - meaning factory routing ... prone or avoids breaking?

Mine was stock

I suspect the factory routing, that puts the oily air from the crankcase right into the intake, provides some lubrication for that shaft.

But I *know* that it also puts oily air into the intake and leads to a little power loss and deposits in the cylinders though.

I leave mine routed in there just because of the hassle factor of a catch can.

Your data point is undermining my theory though Dave. : )

It's been a while but could you use a 1/4" drive breaker bar with a socket and an extension/or not, and a U-joint?

Have any of you that suffered a broken throttle shaft reported the failure to NHTSA?

This failure should have triggered a recall.

If these were car parts failing there would be a Recall already...
Just say'n.

I think I've sold 77 shafts so far and I know there were a few guys that had to buy the whole throttle body to fix it. So for argument sake lets say there were 150 failures. That's a drop in the bucket compared to bikes sold, probably not enough for a recall.

Tootal, don't forget there are people like me who bought a shaft preemptively, but have not had any shaft failures on over a 100k combined on three XBs.

The FACT that the shaft breaks at a screw hole indicates a design or manufacturing defect that could lead to a crash and/or injury or loss of life.

If one person crashed or was injured or killed, due to this design or manufacturer's defect.
That and that alone would be reason to call for a recall.

I was able to get it swapped out after a lot of cussing and carpal tunnel...also, ended up picking up a new throttle body assembly off epay from st. paul harley (better than half price of MSRP), just in case there was more to the problem.

Now that I have the brandy new one sitting on the shelf, I will never have another throttle body issue on the uly.

Reep, I don't think the oily goo going into the throttle body lubes anything. When it hits hot parts it becomes a carbon build up problem. I think (just IMHO) that the carbon build up is the mechanism that may be the cause for the shaft to break.

The action of the butterfly shaft(but for the return spring) should be almost no load and smooth. I have seen some, including mine, where it would no longer "snap" closed to do a TPS reset. The few that I have seen, worked smoother after cleaning the edges of the throttle plate and the throttle bore of carbon to get the "snap" back.

My throttle body was heavily carboned up, to the point I couldn't get the butterfly disc out without some persuasion

I ran my breather lines out of the airbox while I had it apart. The sand in the airbox (bike came from myrtle beach) mixed with the oil splooge probably didn't help things.

Kinda surprised me the PO hadn't done so, as he added a k&n, EBR ECM, and disconnected the actuator cable going to the muffler.
