Decided I'd make a new thread for my engine build progress. The changes I'm making are as follows: 1250 kit with 10* dome pistons Stage II light head work CAT3 cams ECM reprogramming All parts are from my work (NRHS). It started here. I rotated the motor and got things out of the way to pull the top end off. Unfortunately, I was hot and heavy on pulling the top end so no progress pics there. Once I got the top end off, I found some VERY interesting info. The first thing I noticed were that the exhaust gaskets were blown out to the point the coned the exhaust port exit to about half its original size (sorry no pics). The next thing I noticed was this. The dowel was pinched and cracked in half! After looking further into the issue, I found that the front seals were newer than the rears. After talking with Dan, I found that the black seals were prone to leaking and that Buell would goodwill the newer seals to anyone who complained enough about excessive oil usage. Unfortunately, it seems that the dealer put to task to do this on this particular bike decided to only do the front cylinder. That must have been when the dowel was cracked. Honestly none of that matters any more but interesting none the less. Check out the oil build up in the intake port of the rear head. compared to the front moving on. Here are the heads and cylinders prepped up. I wanted a unique look, so I went with black cylinders and painted the heads in VHT silver, then cut the fins with a unique technique to get the jagged facet look similar to diamond or rope cut, but without the $500 cost. I also highlighted our NRHS logos on the cylinders. the cam cover was stuck like no other, but once I got it off, I dropped in these bad boys with Dan's help. CAT3s have a bit more duration than stock cams so they should work well with the higher compression. Moving right along, I put the cam cover back on and got the pushrod tubes and cylinders installed. And I painted the pegasus logos on the pushrod tubes as well Next, I got the heads on. Unfortunately, this is where it stops, until I can get some new throttle cables. Then I'll finish the reassembly. |

Just love your work and really want to know how she's going to live now Are you going to use an EBR Race ECM to go with that upgrade? Is these cams can be used on a stock XB12X engine (08) and if yes do you know what should be the torque gain? Thank you. P.S. Sorry for my bad English but I don't practice enough any more! |

Your bad head looks like both heads did on my Uly at 30k. |

Beautiful work. Your post prompted me to look up those parts. I was surprised to find they are pretty reasonably priced. If I had the time (and trusted my skills ), I'd jump all over that 1250 kit and Stage 2 "Light" headwork. Looks like just the ticket to renew my affection for the bike. What exhaust do you plan to use with your setup? |

Marcbe, I believe the cams can be used in '08s, but I'd have to ask Dan to know for sure. Unfortunately I don't know the numbers on just the cams but I do know these were the only "reasonably priced for me" option as only NRHS and Redshift have custom XB cams, and I needed something with more oomph to go with my build. Buewulf, for now I plan to use the stock exhaust with the valve tied open. My dream exhaust is a Micron, but I'll settle for a race muffler I the near future. Right now I'm tapped out for funds so this is it for the moment, as far as upgrades. (Message edited by phelan on April 12, 2015) |

Got some throttle cables on the way (thanks Paul!), so I can get it back together soon! At some point, I also eventually plan to paint the primary and cam covers black to complete the color transformation. |

Fun to watch. Rooting for an easy startup and idle. |

Sorry to ask , was there any issues with oil pump drive gear and pinion shaft gear? What was runout on your Pinion shaft at that point? I'll think of more crap over next several days I guess. |

No issues, my bike has a bronze gear. Everything looked great. |

At 17K, on my `06, the bronze oil pump drive gear was ground down to the point where the pump stopped. My crankshaft run out was way off. I would check that. I wouldn`t want to see that happen to anybody. Nice build, looking forward to the results. Good luck! |

We looked at the gear and the internals for wear, and everything looked fine. This bike had 68,000 miles before me, all from the original owner. TBH, if there was an issue, I would have suspected it to happen before I got it. I do appreciate and understand the concerns though . |

Last night I got the manifold, header and rocker boxes all on and hooked up. Just lack the mounts, coil, throttle cables, air box, muffler, and ECM. Found out my front isolator is bad so I've got another one on the way; gonna mount this one for now so I can do my heat cycles. |

Nice choice on the black headers. They look great against the two-tone head/cylinder combo. |

Thanks! Once I have time, I'll do the primary and cam covers to match, to complete the color transformation. I never was a fan of the "50 shades of beige" look these motors have factory. |

That will look great. I agree with you, the blacked-out versions of the XB mill that came later look worlds better than the "beige". |

It's alive!!! I don't have the muffler strapped up yet, nor throttle cables hooked up (they're broken anyway), and the old mount is on for the moment, but once I buttoned everything up and turned the key, it started right up! The fresh paint made lots of fumes at first but has seemed to settle. It has ceramic in it so it should bake and stay on nicely. Can't wait to get the parts in so I can start riding it!

I envy the speed with which you are progressing with this. This would be like a twelve-month project for me. Haha! |

Thanks guys! Not a lot of performance XB dynos so hard to know what to expect, except a lot better than before! Dunno if I mentioned it above but a couple other notes; I found that the injectors were installed backwards before, and that the intake port sides of the stock manifold are anemically small compared to every other HD application. The measured ~1.580" ID whereas most are 1.675" or more. I bored them out to ~1.690" and ported the heads to match. (Message edited by phelan on April 14, 2015) |

Throttle cables will be here today! Never thought I'd be so happy to get throttle cables lol! I got the muffler strapped up as well, so it should be pretty smooth sailing at this point. |

Break-in period has begun!!! I took her for he maiden voyage this afternoon, a whopping 4 miles. Still haven't reprogrammed the ECM, will likely do that tomorrow. Hard to keep her under 3500 RPM cuz she pulls so hard!!!

nice build, I am very jealous. I would be strongly enticed to do this build eventually, using the *exact* same parts if there was a canned *race only* map to flash. I realize the map may need to be tweaked to my area or whatnot, but a good starting point template would be part of a nice package deal. I would use the stock can, at least to begin with. |

Jason, once we get the map worked out I'll make sure to keep a file saved of it, so I can send it to you if/when you're ready . |
