I have a 2006 Uly that is making some primary clacking sounds. I can't seem to figure out what's going on. Does anyone know of a mechanic or dealership that actually knows Buells? The HD dealerships I have dealt with lately don't seem to know what a Buell is. I'm located in northen lower Michigan, but will travel south if needed.

Primary adjustment?

Does it come and go with clutch lever actuation?

How's your voltage when running?

Those three will narrow down your potential issue.

First, easy adjustment to check.

Second, could be your clutch getting ready to let go. New clutch pack, not too difficult.

Third, rotor magnet and/or screw could be coming loose.

There's not a lot of "stuff" in there, it's just a matter of going through a trouble-tree...

I hear it when coasting to a stop. Clutch engaged or not. Really clunky in the primary area. Otherwise, everything is normal. Clutch has no effect that I can tell. It seems to go away under load.

25,000 miles. Maybe time for a clutch?

I've adjusted the primary chain...tightening or loosening doesn't help.

Is the chain in spec? You could be blowing past spec as you tighten and loosen.

Is the primary shoe shot? If it is, all the adjustments in the world won't help.

How are you (or ARE you) checking final tension?

As you coast to a stop...give it throttle and see if it changes.

It would be unusual for a Buell clutch to go so soon. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Uly clutch go 50k unless you are doing off road stuff or otherwise abusing it.

Not sure about the primary chain being in spec. The shoe is in almost perfect shape, it does flop around when in hand. I check tension per manual. I've done it many times, so I think I'm good there. As I coast to a stop and then give it throttle, it stops...as far as I can hear. The primary nut is tightened to spec. It all seemed to start after a trans fluid change last season.

I did switch from HD fluid to Amsoil 20w50. Could that cause that kind of noise? Seems unlikely, but I'm no mechanic.

Below is the reply from a guy I know in Harbor Springs. I hope that it is of some help to you.

I haven't done a primary chain adjust on a sporty or buell but have done on my dynas a few times. There are a couple reasonably competent independents within 10 miles of Harbor Springs. I've used both when a project is way beyond my toolkit. Pretty sure either one can help. The nearest dealer is 50 miles.

I think there is a guy on my street with a buell, but I haven't ridden with him yet. Wouldn't that be interesting. Ask him if his neighbor was messing with their carb on Sunday morning.

Thanks. I know the guys at Maxwell. Good guys...Buells are pretty exotic to them. I've never heard of North Coast. I appreciate your time.
