Well, kinda...
wondering if anyone has taken the plunge with those new TKC 70s. I keep checking the one and only thread "New Tire Option To Consider", but no one has posted in quite some time. They've been available for awhile now, hoping some one has taken the "first bite" and has a report...

I'm curious if anyone is using that 120/90 rear for a font..? Or maybe the 70 on the rear and a TLC 80 on the front..??

I saw some of these at the Ktm adv rally in Taos. Looked good but I have not tried them. Four months prior to seeing the Tkc 70 I had put on some New D616s.

The guy from Continental said they will likely make the correct size for the Uly in a year or so. He mentioned sizes to fit the Ducati Multi Strada. Might be a great and versatile tire.

So, given the limited content on Bad Web, and the fact that I've personally benefited from many many of fellow Badwebers successes and failures... I' thought I'd be the ginnie pig.

Here they are, on the Uly a 170-60 TKC70 (rear) and a 120/70 Pirelli MT60R front.

I'll be honest... I change my own tires (Nomar Changer) and that 170/60 was so stiff it made me re-think my logic for a minute... for perspective sake....
The inside (bead) on a 180/55 measures 5" the bead on a 170/60 (or at least this one) measures 3.5". After I got the thing on, it took a heavy ratchet-strap and everything I had to get that bead set... My hands didn't close right for a week... (you all know that feeling).

The Pirelli went on like butter dripping off a hot biscuit.

I have no idea how these are going to feel. that's the experiment, right?

That's all I got for now. Will report more after a few miles...

That tire looks like the perfect tread for a Uly that will be ridden on and off pavement. Let us know how this set up works out.

After running the Tkc 80s on my other bike I would not hesitate running one on front. The rear needed replaced in around 2 k miles. They really surprised me with their grip on and off road. The only down side is the wear on the rear.

What would you gauge the front mileage was an that TKC80?

I have around 3500 miles on the front and it still looks great! This is on my 990 Adv. About 500-700 off pavement.

Rode a very brisk pace on some curvy pavement for about 20 miles and severely radiused the drive side and both sides of each knob. There was also other heavy handed riding in there but those corners made a noticeable difference Heavy throttle and hard corners took the life out of the rear but the front held well.

The asphalt cornering of the Tkc 80 really surprised me.

Replaced the rear with a Heidenau k60 which is a bit more aggressive than the Tkc 70 but very similar.

I don't ride that much off-road, but enough gravel/fire service roads to warrant something that gives me some confidence when I hit it.

That being said, I plan on riding the WABDR this summer with 2 buddies. If the TKC70 proves good, I'll likely keep that on the rear and just throw a TCK80 up front for the trip. Though... who knows, I DO kind of what to see what that massive 180/55 TKC80 looks like on my Uly ; )

Not meaning to hijack, but Pirelli is now making a 180 rear mt60(they used to only make a 160 rear). Standard issue on the new Scrambler Ducati. Or Ducati Scrambler. Whichever.

I had mounted an MT60 in a 160 size on the rear a few years ago. It was toast about 1500 miles later.

Could have used that TKC70 this past weekend. Might have spent a whole lot less time face planting.

I'll second that MT60's have a short life historically.
I put them on my 640 KTM when I did a SM conversion, and the rear didn't last long on even on that small bike.
MT60's have a pretty shallow tread depth to start with, so it could be that simple.
I still have one on the front of the KTM.
They look cool, but wear fast and are expensive in the KTM sizes (160 rear), so I don't plan to buy them again.

I run a TKC80 front, and a Shinko 705 rear. I really like this setup. I have about 4k miles on both now and they are both at about 50% tread life. Mostly highway with lots of gravel, dirt, mud, and even a bit of snow.

The TKC80 is great up front- it doesn't get squirrely in mud like the OEM Scorpion Trail.

The Shinko is a great tire for $90. I run a 150/70R.

Another option for some would be Metzlers Karoo 3 rear. I have 2500 on my tkc80 front 170/60 Karoo 3 rear. First pic is at 1400 miles of 70% on road with 7-8/32nds of the original 10/32 tread depth. Second is with another 1100 miles of all on road use, still have 5-6/32nds left. Decent on road traction, they keep up with the 80's up front. Good fore/aft traction off road, but they do slide on a greasy side hill.

Put a TKC70 rear on for a recent trip, and was more than happy with performance. I had hoped to combine with a trail attack front, but was disappointed on gravel, so put on a TKC80 up front. Trip was 3600 miles with about 400 off road. The 400 included WY91, Geyser Pass in UT, and the loops for Valley of the Gods and Monument Valley.
Surfaces were sand, gravel and rock - mostly gravel. The 70 rear always seemed to handle anything the 80 up front could. Anytime it got sketchy either the front or myself were to blame. Only small issue was it wasn't able to bite and accelerate on washboards like my Karoo 3 had.
Paved roads: again it kept up with whatever I was willing to do with the 80 front. It was raining the entire time I was on CO550 and it felt solid.
Wear: after 3600 miles it was somewhat squared, but I still had 8/32 tread near the center with no odd wear patterns.
At this point, I would replace with another 70 and look forward to a front in our size.

Jeff, Thanks for the 70 report! I have read a lot of reports about the front tire having some real issues. Most have reported not going to buy the front again. I don't know if Conti has them worked out or not.

My understanding is Conti hasn't made a 17" front TKC 70 yet. Saw somewhere that they plan to release one in late 15 or early 16.

Update. New tire time, got 7500 miles out of my TKC 80 front and 6260 out of the TKC 70 rear. Both at 3/32. Putting on another TKC 80 front and trying a k-60 rear.

Ok, I've been a bad boy, only have about 1600 miles on the Uly this year.
Bought a Honda CB500x and upgraded the suspension and wheels to get closer to the bike I had hoped the AX would be. Put 9200 miles on the Honda with a TKC 80 front/ K60 rear in two weeks in July. 1700 miles of it was off pavement, including the Magruder Corridor in Idaho, a 70 mile portion of the WABDR, the Dalton Highway to Prudhoe, atop of the World Hwy and the Waterfalls route in the NWT.
On pavement I did Going to the Sun, 129 to Enterprise OR, Sea to Sky Hwy, the Seward Hwy plus all the other roads up and around AK.
A great tire combo. Both survived the 9200 miles. The TKC80 was near the end of its life, but not dangerous, the K60 is a bit flat spotted, but still has 6/32 tread.
On pavement the K60 doesn't have the grip of the TKC70, it is harder rubber. I dialed back to about 80% of what I could do on the 70's and had no problems. Likewise in rain, I did have to dial back some. Off pavement it was great. Left Fairbamks in the rain up the Dalton, 750 mile day, 600 miles gravel, 150 in the rain, other parts wet or under construction...it was great.
The cb500x is similar to the Uly in geometry and weight, about 450lbs with gear. I was running 120/70 17 front and 150/70 17 rear. It only has 48hp out of its 471cc motor (ugg). With aftermarket suspension upgrades...suspension was on par.
I plan to continue running that tire combo.
