Didn't want to start new thread, but did ALOT of searches without exact answer found.
I have '06XB12X. I want to get another ECM to use with ECMSPy and work on my pinging issue. Current ECM is EBR, so don't want to lock it up using ECMSpy.
My stock ECM has a failure code (cracked I think).
I know a 2004-2007 ECM is OK for me. What about 2003? I see mixed messages on this.
Specifically, a 2003 XB9 ECU to reflash for my '06 XB12?

How can I verify what year the ECM is from based on these numbers below (no Part number found on listing):
N0306.02A8 02168
BX9US20CB050

I missed out on a 2006 XB12 ECM auction already!

Oh, and using ECMSPy to just look at my EBR ECM (with help from ericz), I am a little annoyed.
It appears the exhaust valve control is set to "NO", which is different than what EBR tech told me a couple years back when I tested it and could never see the valve open (cable move on airbox lid).
I'd simply move it to "Yes" except I don't want to risk my EBR ECU with ECM Spy, and I don't know if the EBR ECM even has the right control logic for the valve if they have it turned off. I knew the EBR ECM would not throw a code for the valve, but they told me it would still operate.
When I plugged in my old (faulty) stock ECM last night, it immediately tested the valve control solenoid, which EBR never did. The EBR will cycle the valve if I do the WOT/key-on valve solenoid test though.

Regarding your findings with ECMspy, they may not be correct. The free ECMspy does not read the EBR ECM correctly, it will show the wrong data in some locations, possibly including what you see about the muffler valve.


As for the 03 ECM, it is a different generation of fuel injection, I'm not sure if it will support all the same parameters as the DDFI2 ECMs, like the exhaust valve actuator.

OK Froggy, I was hoping you might chime in on this.
I knew the ECMSPY was not a smart choice to burn the EBR ECM, but never thought it might read the EBR wrong.
fact still remains that I have never been able to witness the EBR command the exhaust valve to open, though. I will re-verify I can get this to happen on the faulty stock ECM if the weather improves. It's possible I am mistaking this for the diagnostics page where Active Muffler Control would be checked "OFF" in the EBR ECM.
I am brand new to the Buell ECM calibration.
All my experience is 10+ years ago doign heavy duty diesel calibration development.
thanks for the '03 answer. I can't verify the year of the ECM I gave numbers for in the post, but thinking it might be an '03 that I should avoid. too bad as it was selling for half of the other buy it now choices.

Closer view of the pictures in the ebay listing shows there is no center spade connector between the 2 main harness connectors. IIRC that is for the muffler valve, so that alone means the ECM would not work for me if I want the valve to work (which I do for now).

Ii don't mean to thread jack, but I think that I am having ECM issues too. I have 2006 Uly, K&N air filter, comfort kit, I have preformed all of the normal maintenance, and I personally eliminated the valve in my muffler. My issue happens as I slab it down the 4 lane highway on my way to work. At about the 15-20 minute mark into my ride the it seems like the Uly is trying to run on only one cylinder. Eventually it works itself out of this predicament, but what is causing this? If it is the ECM do I replace with a conventional ECM or a Race ECM?

The part number listed is the 03 XB9 DDFI1 ecm.

Thanks Froggy, I figured that out from additional internet searches, and ruled out buying it based on your input above and noticing it had no spade connector.

Calla - are you getting a check engine light/code? there is a code for ECM failure (my OEM ECM has it). IIRC it is a code 48. Of course, I am sure it's possible to have an ECM issue without the code. My issue was an occasional stumble with a check engine light that would go away in a few seconds.
I replaced mine with an EBR ECM because it was reasonably priced ($250 at that time, now just over $300 I think).
However, they don't sell the '06-'07 "stock" calibration anymore like I have. they stopped selling it shortly after I got mine.
I'd be willing to discuss a trade to get another stock ECM (for easier ECMSPY work), but it would have to be a known good stock ECM, not one that is under suspicion.
I'd also be willing to buy someone's stock ECM if they had one just lying around after going to an EBR or Race ECM.

My bad, yes I am getting a check engine light when it starts to act up.
I do alright manipulating desktops, laptops, iPads and what not but I have zero experience hooking any of them up to my Uly. How do I go about pulling those codes to help figure out what is ailing with my Buell?

If you don't have a cable/ECMSpy or some setup to connect and pull the codes the formal way, you can do it via the 4 pin diagnostic connector by connecting the proper pins with a light and counting the flashes.
I don't do it that way, since I have the software and cable, but did it that way once many years ago to make sure it worked.
For the exact procedure, I strongly recommend you buy the service manual (if not already). It's paid for itself about 10x for me, and I have had very few problems with my bike in 8 years.
Otherwise, search here for the method, maybe in Knowledge Vault.
Not related to your issue here, but in general read up on the BB&D New Owners thread section. Very good collection of Uly info if you have not already done so.
