Thinking about having my exhaust moded this winter during off season. Have looked at Odies special ops, emailed him with no reply. Also looking at Hawk performance mod. Any suggestions and would be greatly appreciated.

I have the race pipe but if I was going to do it over again, I would have the stock exhaust ceramic coated! The stock was much better at warming up the bike.

Odie (special ops) is slow to reply, as he does exhausts on the side in addition to two full time jobs and a family. He will eventually get back to you if you are patient.

Drummer is another great option for modified mufflers, I don't recommend the hawk.

I had a Drummer on my Uly for a while, and while an excellent product, the drone just got to me on longer rides (as in, couple/few hundred - 1k mile days). I've gone back to a stock muffler and can't be happier with the performance, or the sound. The stock exhaust is truly an unsung hero - the valve does a great job, and the quiet is a blessing on longer rides.

I am in process of modding a pipe right now....I took 4" of the back ad removed the center pipe...drilled a bunch of holes in the third pipe and packed the entire cavity with stainless steel wool...then made a 3" front exit pipe...and finally ...dull nickel plated the entire can to prevent corrosion ...and as an added bonus...the dull nickel color matches the Uly wheels and trim perfectly...

I finished it yesterday. today i am installing new intake seals and will post pics and a sound clip as soon as its all back together

Noisier exhausts are way over rated. Waste of money and very detrimental to your hearing. Noisy exhausts are like barking dogs, nobody loves anybody else's dog.

Well said; agree...

Willywbl,
Buy a second muffler, mod it.
Because at some point in the future; you will likely want (or need by force of law) to go back to stock.

I have an aborted project XB muffler you can have cheap, send PM if interested.

If you can find a race pipe, that is your best bet. It is loud but not "you are a dick" loud, and the race ECM is tuned to match it.

The stock pipe is the best street pipe though.

I ran an Odie pipe for a month or two, then traded it back for stock because I got tired of being an @#@(*&*#.

I also think the stock exhaust is fine. The noise is sufficient. It has actually got a bit noisier with age. How long do they last, though? Anyone had one rot?

Guess it depends on where you live (think salt on the roads all winter). My original muffler is heavily pitted and the area around the outlet pipe is totally rusted through. IA valve still works, I might patch it as a back up. Oh yeah, the bike's an 08 bought in 09 so over six years out of the original.

How long it lasts is definitely dependant upon the year of the bike. I have an 09' Uly which had the muffler almost completely disintegrate after 6 mos. I picked up the bike in November 08' and rode it (as well as a few earlier model year XB's) all winter in Jersey. This thing really looked like it was salvaged from a WWII shipwreck in the south pacific. Actually got a new replacement on warranty after much bitching and had that one ceramic coated before I even installed it by a company that I will not mention here. That one lasted maybe a year. The mufflers on my 03', 04' & 05' XB's are still looking OK. Not like new but waayyy better than 2 09's and one of them was ceramic coated ! I also notice that a lot of the T-27's on the 09' are zink plated and not SS like on the older XB's. I think HD started making serious cutbacks to Buell before administering the death blow. That is why I have asked around here for an 06' Uly muffler. So that I can see if it will do better than my 09's.

With such a glowing reference, I'll hang on to my 06 Uly muffler!

I was afraid that my review might indeed make them harder to come by and possibly more expensive. however I felt it was the right thing to do. Remember though, I've no experience with the 06',07' & 08' model years. Your 06' might be a rust bucket (I do hope it is not) and the 08's might still be high quality. I just know that I need one. As far as the OP's question...I have stock muffler, Buell race can, Drummer, Ti-Force and Beson exhausts on my bikes. The Uly is the only one with stock as it is my road dog and I often am pulling in to campgrounds after hours with it. I never want to be "that guy". With that said, My Drummer is my favorite. If you ride like you have some sense it's easy to keep quiet enough so as not to be a dick and piss people off.

Here are a couple of pictures of an 09' XB12 muffler that I put on my Uly because I couldn't get my hands on a Uly specific muffler fast enough. The blue/purple outlet and chin mount are the color of the ceramic that I had applied to the whole thing. All I can think is that HD specified the cheapest steel possible.

How the hell did you do that? Even the BELT is rusty!

When I lived in the Great White North, when vehicles got that rusty it was time to dig a hole in the ground and bury it!.....or.....it became an off road race vehicle.

Thanks for reminding me why I moved away from the "rust belt" thirty some years ago.

It's not the geographical location. Don't get me wrong the location sucks but it is not to blame for all that rust. HD's filthy rotten dirty stinkin' bean counters are. All of my early model XB's look fine and they are subjected to the same treatment. everywhere HD could put sub-standard cheaper steel on this bike...they did. I hate it, I'm just glad that I have earlier models so that this wasn't my only experience with Buell. If it was I would hate Buell almost as much as I hate HD

Nah! I felt silly before!

I used to run chain oilers on my dirt bikes. Easily would double the life of the chain and sprockets.

Bet YOU feel silly now!

Minor thread jack...

I have a partial chain setup for my Uly. I have the chain, front sprocket and tensioner pulley. What size rear sprocket do I need and where can I get it.
