After finishing up the wire loom fix on my 10' uly and working over the headlight wiring (cut n crimp) to eliminate the connector and thus keep both lights, I want to upgrade my headlights. I have had the HIDs in my previous Uly's, but always had issue with light spread and the drivers flashing me. I have seen the LED light mod recently here and those might be the way I go, but I am really curious about the PIAA Extreme White headlights. I have a set of PIAA 1100 on my BMW touring bike and they are amazing, but the housings get really hot. I am concerned that if I upgrade my stock H7's to the PIAA Extreme White H7's, I am worried I will melt my housing. Does anyone have any experience with the PIAA's. | ||

I don't have experience with the PIAA's in a Uly...but I do with HID's, and with LED's. My 06 currently runs an HID low beam, LED high beam, and (different) PIAA aux lights that are high-beam triggered. The LED...is NOT powerful enough to be a low beam. Period. The tech just isn't there yet. But...I bought a pair of LED's, mainly so I could have a low-wattage highbeam for my CR. It's...passable, and that's about as good as it gets (2500 lumen LED). The HID - if you're getting flashed, it's not the HID's fault, you have it focused (aimed) too high. I never get flashed. Take a T27 screwdriver with you one night, loosen the side screws before you leave, and go for a ride. Get flashed? Pull over, loosen the bottom bolt and aim the light down a degree or two. Tighten and ride. Still get flashed? Repeat. Don't get flashed? Tighten those side screws and you're done. And for your 1100's...the (small) housings are the heat sinks, they're designed to get hot. "Extreme white" is a bulb color temperature, not a lamp design. They put gases in the envelope (inside the glass) that helps the filament burn white as opposed to yellowish. Wattage creates heat, not color temp. Personally...I'd put an HID in the low, aim the light properly, add aux lights, and use an LED highbeam. Oh. Wait. I did that already  | ||

HID low beam and a pair of LED spots from the same source. They were like $35 delivered. Silverstar high beam. This is the right setup for me because I have plenty of light for all occasions AND the charging system can handle it. | ||

I put an LED in from advmonster. it's way better than the stock halogen. (although, possibly not as good as HID) the pictures below have the same aperture, but the before has a longer exposure time (point & shoot camera), so it looks brighter than it should. before:  After:  (Message edited by argentcorvid on November 08, 2014) | ||

My LED is the same...and it's nowhere NEAR the output of a 35w HID. |
