Bike has been running like crap, and barely starts when hot, sometimes to the point where I had to wait a while between attempts. Not fun when it's 90deg or more and you're suited up in the open. Especially not fun when the wife is with you and attired likewise.

Well I *think* I fixed it today. Yesterday I pulled the throttle body since it had a leak at the rear injector seal. The James silicone intake seals still looked good after about 5k since my overhaul but I replaced them anyway with stockers. Replaced the injector seals after thoroughly cleaning the bores and since the rear has never fit as tight as the front I persuaded them both to seal a little better with Hylomar. Did a good TPS reset and went for a ride.

It was better but still not great, hunting idle, pinging even more, and after parking it for 1/2 hour the same leaned out hard to start trying to die thing. Even cold starts took several cranks before catching.

So I pulled the fuel pump, again. When I refurbed it last month I noticed that the fuel pressure regulator had pushed away from the housing enough that part of the o-ring had also pushed out, due to one of the four retaining clips holding on the retaining ring was broken. I pushed it back in and looped a ziptie around it and it seemed it would hold.

Apparently not, today when I pulled the pump assembly I saw that the ziptie had moved from the fuel pressure and the o-ring was sticking out again. Thinking maybe I had a frozen regulator or something I bought a replacement from a local dealer that actually had one in stock. I know without pics this may be hard to picture, but I pushed a ziptie through the space in the ring and through the housing, and instead of looping it back around to lock it I cut the lock from a second tie and used it to lock directly in line with the first. Much more secure and zero flex. Made a couple adjustments to the pump and screen and put it back in the frame.

Turned on the power and the priming pump even sounded better, hit the button and it started on second crank! Couple of hiccups, then settled into a good idle, so I went for a ride.

Oh man, what a difference! Rode freeway for 10 miles to get the ECM to relearn, got off, sat through a couple lights where it started to get pretty warm, then got back on the freeway. This particular onramp is a long straight incline for about 1/3 mile, so I shifted 1-2-3 quickly and opened it up in 3rd. Yesterday this would have rewarded me with ping city, today it pulled like a locomotive and kept going.

Rode around for awhile and after I parked it at home I went out a few times to restart it, no issues whatsoever. I'm pretty happy about all this.

So I guess the regulator was bad, or the missing clip allowing the o-ring to slip out caused low fuel pressure, but I'm counting on the zip-tie fix to take care of it. A new housing is a $70 piece of plastic, something I want to avoid.
