Author Message   Griffmeister Posted on Sunday, September 28, 2014 - 09:06 pm:        So, as you may know, I have my bike running again after a total tear down, sorted out a few issues and still left with one running problem. Pops a lot out the exhaust on decel when cold as well as a little at idle. As it warms up it gets better but still there a little. Also seems a little sluggish around 3000 RPM but strong after that. Everything is stock except for a little tweaking of the muffler. Shouldn't be enough to affect it. It was off another model so the outlet was wrong. Took 1 inch off the end and made a Y pipe to exit the last tube out the rear. Okay, tell me the bad news. I have the feeling I may have an intake leak but wanted to run it by everyone just in case there's some other ideas. That right side scoop is such a pain to get off to access the intake.   Natexlh1000 Posted on Sunday, September 28, 2014 - 09:24 pm:        You might have lean spots now due to your 1/3 muffler bypass job. Do you have a stock muffler you could swap in to see if it's better/different?   Etennuly Posted on Monday, September 29, 2014 - 10:26 am:        Could just be the exhaust pipe is not i00% sealed at the front clamp. This could cause a leak in the high pressure area of the exhaust and it will become lesser as the pipe heats up and expands. This clamp area leak will nearly always cause a backfire during deceleration.   Griffmeister Posted on Monday, September 29, 2014 - 07:15 pm:        Went through a lot of care putting that muffler on with all new hardware, I hope it's not leaking but I guess I'd better check. While the right scoop is a PIA to get off, can't get a ratchet and socket on the bottom front screw, it's still easier than the other tests. Guess I'll do a leak test top and bottom just to be sure.   Tootal Posted on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 - 08:09 am:        I've seen where folks are rotating the engine to replace the intake seals. If you can make some special tools to get the stock screws out then replace the seals and go back with these screws which is what older Harley's use to use: http://www.grainger.com/product/Hex-Cap-Screw-2FA6 7?functionCode=P2IDP2PCP I would find some plated ones, I just wanted to express the 12 point heads. They use a 1/4" 12 point box end wrench which is fairly easy to use within the tight working quarters on the Buell.
